Access to safe, hygienic food preparation facilities is essential for student health, dignity, and wellbeing. For students living in hostel environments, kitchen conditions directly affect daily nutrition, sanitation, and overall quality of life. When facilities deteriorate due to long term wear and limited maintenance, the risks to health and safety increase, creating additional challenges for students already facing social and economic barriers.
At Sithyvinayakar Hindu College in the Mannar District of Sri Lanka, hostel students rely on shared kitchen facilities for their daily meals while pursuing uninterrupted education. Over time, the condition of the hostel kitchen declined significantly, compromising hygiene standards and creating an unsafe environment for food preparation.
Recognizing the urgency of these conditions, the Repairing of Hostel Kitchen Facilities project was implemented to restore a safe, functional, and hygienic cooking space for students residing at the hostel.
Improving Hostel Kitchen Infrastructure at Sithyvinayakar Hindu College
The project was carried out at Sithyvinayakar Hindu College in Uppukkulam, Mannar District, supporting 50 hostel students primarily from low income Tamil families. They are students ranging from grade 6 to advance level. Many of these students travel from distant villages to access education, making the hostel an essential part of their daily lives.
Prior to the intervention, the kitchen faced multiple challenges, including cracked walls, damaged cooking areas, inadequate ventilation, unsafe electrical fittings, and worn flooring. These conditions posed health risks, reduced the efficiency of meal preparation, and affected the overall living environment for students.
The primary objective of the project was to rehabilitate the kitchen infrastructure to meet basic hygiene and safety standards, ensuring that students had access to nutritious meals prepared in a clean and secure setting.
Project Implementation and Facility Upgrades
The intervention focused on practical and sustainable improvements to address both immediate safety concerns and long term functionality. Key activities included repairing the kitchen floor, upgrading cooking areas, improving ventilation systems, installing protective mesh, and completing essential electrical work. The kitchen was also repainted to provide a clean and refreshed environment suitable for daily use.
These upgrades were carefully planned to ensure durability and ease of maintenance. By restoring core infrastructure, the project aimed to create a safer space for food preparation while supporting healthier living conditions within the hostel.
Following completion, the renovated kitchen now provides a functional and hygienic environment that supports efficient meal preparation for students on a daily basis. The renovation and improvement initiatives at Sithyvinayakar Hindu College have contributed to meaningful enhancements across hostel and academic facilities, directly supporting student health, wellbeing, and learning environments.

Beneficiaries and Impact on Student Wellbeing
A total of 50 hostel students directly benefited from the project. With improved kitchen facilities, students now have access to meals prepared under safer and more hygienic conditions, reducing health risks associated with poor sanitation and unsafe cooking environments.
The improved facilities also ease the daily responsibilities of hostel staff while enhancing the overall living conditions for students. For many, this intervention contributes to a more stable and supportive environment, allowing them to focus more effectively on their education.
By addressing essential infrastructure needs, the project supports both the physical wellbeing and dignity of students residing at the hostel.
Supporting Education Through Safe Living Environments
This project reflects a broader commitment to strengthening education by improving the living conditions that support student success. Safe and hygienic hostel facilities play a crucial role in ensuring that students from vulnerable backgrounds can pursue education without additional health or safety barriers.
