Beyond the Classroom: Celebrating Football Excellence in Rural Batticaloa

Sport has the power to bring communities together, build confidence and provide young people with opportunities to discover their potential. At BT/BW/Pannchenai Pari Vidyalayam in Batticaloa West, students demonstrated how dedication and teamwork could lead to remarkable achievements, even in a rural school with limited resources.

On 29 September 2026, a field visit was conducted to recognize the school’s sporting accomplishments, better understand its needs and provide football uniforms to support its young athletes.

A Rural School with an Outstanding Football Legacy

Located in a remote area of the Batticaloa District, Pannchenai Pari Vidyalayam served approximately 256 students from Grade 1 to Grade 13, supported by 18 teachers.

Despite its rural location, the school had established an impressive reputation in football. For approximately a decade, its students had consistently participated in national level competitions, demonstrating their commitment to the sport.

One of the school’s most significant achievements came in 2017, when its football team secured first place at the national level. This accomplishment reflected the talent, discipline and teamwork developed by its young players.

The school’s continued participation in competitive football highlighted the determination of its students and the importance of extracurricular opportunities within rural communities.

Encouraging the Next Generation of Players

At the time of the visit, Pannchenai Pari Vidyalayam had two football teams competing at the national level: an under 12 team and an under 17 team, each consisting of 15 players.

To recognize their efforts and encourage their continued participation, football jerseys and shorts were donated to the school’s teams.

The uniforms provided practical support for the young athletes as they prepared for competitions and represented their school. They also served as a gesture of encouragement, recognizing the students’ commitment to developing their sporting abilities.

The visit offered an opportunity to engage with the school community, learn about its football programme and acknowledge the achievements of students who had continued to excel in the sport.

Recognizing Talent Beyond Geographical Barriers

The achievements of Pannchenai Pari Vidyalayam demonstrated that sporting excellence was not limited to schools with extensive facilities or resources.

Through years of participation in national competitions, the students had shown how enthusiasm, teamwork and consistent effort could create meaningful opportunities beyond their immediate community.

Their success also highlighted the value of supporting extracurricular activities alongside academic education. Participation in sport provided opportunities for students to develop discipline, leadership, resilience and confidence while strengthening their connection to their school.
