Fishermen and women in Trincomalee actively participating in the Vanni Hope and NAQDA-supported fingerling stocking project, promoting sustainable fishing, aquaculture development, and economic empowerment for over 225 families in rural Sri Lanka.

Empowering Fishing Communities Through Freshwater Fingerling Stocking in Trincomalee

Vanni Hope is proud to support the stocking of advanced fingerlings in four seasonal tanks in the Trincomalee District, enhancing the livelihoods of freshwater fishermen in rural villages. This initiative has been implemented in partnership with The Nation Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) in Trincomalee, providing technical assistance and guidance through NAQDA extension officer Jeyakaran.

The project focuses on four seasonal tanks:

  • Ehathantamurippu
  • Vadalikulam (Kuchchaveli DS Division)
  • Elakanthakulam
  • Kusavankulam (Mutur DS Division)

By supporting over 125+ families, this initiative is playing a crucial role in sustainable fisheries, improving food security, and providing economic empowerment to rural fishing communities.

Women Leading the Way in Kusavankulam

One of the most inspiring aspects of this project is the active involvement of women in the Kusavan Tank. Women have taken on key roles in various aspects of the initiative, including:

  • Fishing and breeding of fish
  • Managing and maintaining the tanks
  • Marketing and selling the harvested fish

Their participation has not only increased the overall productivity of the project but has also created greater economic and social empowerment for women in the community. By earning their own income and taking ownership of their work, these women are setting a strong example for the next generation.

Anticipated Harvesting and Economic Impact

After five to six months of dedicated work, the harvesting period is expected to commence from February to July. This is a critical time when families will begin to reap the rewards of their hard work. Nearly 250 families in the targeted villages will benefit financially, allowing them to:

  • Improve education opportunities for their children
  • Access better healthcare services
  • Invest in other income-generating activities

This project is not just about fishing—it is about sustainable livelihoods. The economic boost from the fish sales will uplift entire communities, supporting long-term development and resilience in these rural areas.

A Collaborative Effort for Lasting Change

This initiative would not have been possible without strong partnerships. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Jeyakaran from NAQDA for his dedication in coordinating this project and for sharing these incredible photos. His expertise and collaboration with our team have been instrumental in making this intervention a success.

We remain committed to sustainable development projects that empower communities, promote economic stability, and create lasting positive change.
