Empowering a Fisherman’s Family of 5 Through Sustainable Livelihood Support

A livelihood assistance project was successfully carried out in Chettijar Taraveli, School Area, Poonagari, in the Kilinochchi District, to support the fishing livelihood of Mr. Joseph Saboson and his family of five. Through this initiative, a brand new Yamaha 40HP fishing motor was officially handed over to help strengthen the family’s income generating activities and improve their long term financial stability.

Mr. Joseph Saboson, a dedicated fisherman and father of three children, had been facing challenges in maintaining a stable livelihood due to limited fishing resources and economic hardship. His family includes two school going children studying in Grades 7 and 4 at Kili Wigneswara Vidyalaya, as well as a two year old child who depends on the family’s daily income for care and support.

Providing Essential Fishing Equipment for Sustainable Income

As part of the project, a Yamaha 40HP outboard fishing engine valued at over LKR 927,000 was provided to enhance the beneficiary’s fishing operations and improve access to fishing areas. This reflects the strong commitment toward creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for vulnerable rural families.

The provision of the fishing motor now allows Mr. Joseph Saboson to carry out fishing activities more efficiently, independently, and safely. Improved mobility and fishing productivity are expected to significantly contribute toward strengthening household income and ensuring greater financial security for the family.

The project focused not only on immediate livelihood assistance, but also on helping create a long term and sustainable future for the beneficiary and his children through reliable income generation opportunities.

Supporting Rural Fishing Communities Through Compassionate Giving

Fishing remains one of the primary sources of livelihood for many families in coastal and rural communities across the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. However, limited access to proper fishing equipment often creates financial difficulties and restricts families from maintaining stable incomes.

Recognizing these challenges, Vanni Hope continues to support vulnerable families through practical livelihood assistance projects that directly improve economic independence and community resilience. The successful completion of this project reflects the meaningful impact that targeted humanitarian support can have on families striving to rebuild and strengthen their livelihoods.

The beneficiary expressed heartfelt gratitude for the assistance provided, sharing that the fishing machinery would make a meaningful difference in supporting his family and improving the future development of his fishing activities.

Creating Hope for a More Secure Future

The successful handover of the fishing motor marked an important step toward improving the living conditions and economic stability of Mr. Joseph Saboson and his family. By supporting livelihood development initiatives such as this, Vanni Hope continues to empower rural families with opportunities to build sustainable futures through dignity, hard work, and self reliance.

This meaningful livelihood initiative was implemented by Vanni Hope with the generous sponsorship of Mr. Saran Sriananthakumar and Mr. Thuraisingam Sahanmugananthakumar from Australia.

This project was completed with the participation and support of Vanni Hope representatives and community members who contributed toward ensuring the successful implementation and monitoring of the initiative in Poonagari, Kilinochchi District.
