Empowering 25 Women in Muttur Through Climate Resilient Home Gardening

As part of ongoing post disaster recovery efforts, a home gardening initiative was implemented in Kadakkaraichenai, Muttur, in the Trincomalee District. This project was designed to support vulnerable communities by promoting sustainable and climate-resilient livelihood opportunities.

With the support of empower projects, this initiative focused on equipping 25 women members of the Puthumai Pengal Society with the resources needed to establish and maintain home gardens using practical and effective cultivation methods.

Providing Essential Resources for Home Gardening

Under this initiative, 25 selected women received plant seedlings including eggplant, chillies, and curry chillies. In addition, essential materials such as grow bags, organic compost fertilizer, and plant growth boosters were distributed to support successful home gardening.

These resources were provided to ensure that beneficiaries could immediately begin cultivating their own produce in a sustainable and manageable way, even within limited space.

Promoting Food Security and Economic Stability

This initiative plays an important role in improving household food security by enabling families to grow their own vegetables. At the same time, it creates an opportunity for women to generate additional income through surplus produce.

By supporting women led households, the project contributes to strengthening economic resilience and reducing dependency on external sources for basic food needs.

Encouraging Climate Resilient Agricultural Practices

A key focus of this project is the promotion of climate resilient farming methods. Through the introduction of sustainable home gardening practices, beneficiaries are better prepared to adapt to environmental challenges such as drought and flooding.

These methods help ensure more stable and consistent food production, even in the face of changing climate conditions.

Creating Long Term Impact in the Community

Through this initiative, all 25 beneficiary families now have access to an additional source of income while improving their overall food security. Beyond immediate support, the project promotes long term sustainability by encouraging practices that can be continued and expanded over time.

This initiative reflects a meaningful step towards rebuilding livelihoods and empowering women in post disaster communities.

We also thank empower projects for their generous support and sponsorship of this initiative.
