Vanni Hope distributing emergency food packs to 145 flood-affected families in Valaiththoddam and Mudduchchenai, Eachchilampattu Division

Flood Relief for 145 Families in Valaithottam and Mudduchchenai After Cyclone Ditwah

Heavy and persistent rainfall across the Trincomalee District caused significant flooding throughout the Eachchilampattu Division, leaving families cut off from basic resources and forcing many to evacuate their homes. Among the most affected were residents of Valaithottam Village and Mudduchchenai Village, where homes, food stocks and livelihoods were severely impacted by rising floodwaters.

To support families during this emergency, Vanni Hope conducted a rapid humanitarian intervention designed to restore access to food and essentials.

Supporting 145 Families With Immediate Food Relief

In response to the crisis, Vanni Hope distributed 145 dry-food packs to families affected by the flooding in both villages. Heavy rainfall left many homes submerged or damaged, with water intrusion destroying stored food and making daily survival challenging.

With movement restricted and essential goods unavailable, many families were forced to remain indoors or seek temporary refuge in community buildings, schools and nearby homes. Immediate assistance was critical to protecting vulnerable groups such as children, elderly individuals and women during this early phase of displacement.

Situation Overview

  • Location: Valaithottam & Mudduchchenai
  • Division: Eachchilampattu Division
  • District: Trincomalee
  • Emergency Type: Flooding due to continuous heavy rainfall
  • Temporary Relocation: Schools, community spaces and safe houses used as shelters

The flooding caused extensive damage to household belongings, food stocks and property infrastructure. Emergency food relief helped families stabilise while recovery efforts begin to form around long-term needs.

Continuing Support and Recovery

While immediate assistance has helped families navigate the first critical days of displacement, the recovery process remains ongoing. Vanni Hope will continue to monitor conditions in the region and assess needs relating to long-term rebuilding, health support, safe water access and rehabilitation of affected households.

This intervention forms part of Vanni Hope’s continuing Cyclone Ditwah emergency response, reaching communities across multiple districts in Sri Lanka.
