Clean Water, Renewed Hope: Supporting Cyclone Affected Families in Kandy

A clean drinking water supply project was successfully completed and officially handed over to 46 families living in temporary shelters in Naranghena Division, Loolecondera Estate, Kandy District. The families had been severely affected by Cyclone Ditwah, leaving access to essential services such as reliable clean water particularly important during their recovery.

The project strengthened water infrastructure within the temporary settlement, providing families with a safer and more dependable source of water for their everyday needs. The original project was established in response to limited water supply infrastructure in the rural estate community and recognized reliable water access as essential to supporting basic living conditions.

Bringing Reliable Water Directly to Households

Under the completed initiative, clean drinking water was conveyed to the community through a pipeline extending approximately two kilometres and distributed to individual households through water storage tanks.

This system provided families with convenient access to water within the settlement, reducing some of the difficulties they had experienced in obtaining this basic necessity. The project had been designed specifically to restore water infrastructure through pipeline facilities and establish clean, safe, and functional water access.

Improving Health, Hygiene and Everyday Life

Reliable access to clean water is fundamental to maintaining hygiene, preparing food, supporting sanitation, and protecting the wellbeing of families. For households already experiencing the challenges associated with temporary living conditions, establishing a dependable water supply represented an important improvement to daily life.

The initiative was designed to improve health, hygiene, comfort, and dignity, while contributing to better overall living conditions and community wellbeing

Supporting Families on the Road to Recovery

For families rebuilding their lives following Cyclone Ditwah, access to essential infrastructure formed an important part of restoring stability. The new water system helped alleviate an everyday hardship while creating a healthier and more supportive environment within the temporary settlement.

Beyond providing immediate access to water, the project reflected a broader commitment to strengthening community resilience and ensuring families could move forward with greater security and dignity.

Creating a Water System for the Future

Sustainability was incorporated into the project to help protect its benefits over the longer term. The original plan included community participation and local ownership, alongside basic maintenance and responsible water use to help keep the system functional and reduce future breakdowns.

Through these measures, the completed infrastructure was intended not only to respond to an immediate need but also to provide a more sustainable source of clean water for the community.

A Meaningful Investment in Community Wellbeing

This essential humanitarian initiative was generously sponsored by MCC Penang. The project proposal identified water and sanitation as its core sector and prioritised improved living conditions through reliable water infrastructure.

Through this support, 46 families affected by Cyclone Ditwah gained access to clean and reliable drinking water, helping restore health, dignity, comfort, and hope as they continued rebuilding their lives.
