Daily life was severely disrupted for families in Kalkiriyawa Estate, located under the Panwila Divisional Secretariat in the Kandy District, after heavy rainfall triggered landslides across the area. Damaged access routes, electricity disruptions and unsafe ground conditions made it difficult for families to cook, obtain supplies and manage basic daily needs.
In response to this emergency, Vanni Hope carried out a food relief intervention to support affected families during this challenging period.
Situation Overview
Approximately 120 families, representing around 410 individuals, were affected by heavy rains and landslides in Kalkiriyawa Estate. The situation resulted in interrupted transport, electricity outages, temporary shelter challenges and limited access to food, clothing and other basic necessities.
These disruptions placed significant strain on families, particularly those already facing vulnerability.
Emergency Food Relief Intervention
To address immediate food insecurity, dry-food supplies were provided to 50 families, benefiting approximately 251 individuals. This timely assistance helped stabilise household food needs while access routes and essential services remained disrupted.
The distribution provided reassurance and practical support to families during a period of uncertainty.
Community Response and Impact
Children and families expressed happiness and gratitude for the support, sharing that the food supplies brought comfort and a sense of normalcy despite the difficult conditions. Beyond addressing immediate needs, the intervention helped strengthen community resilience as families continued to cope with damaged infrastructure and limited services.
Continuing Support
This food relief initiative forms part of Vanni Hope’s broader emergency response to severe weather impacts across Sri Lanka. While immediate needs have been addressed, continued support will be important as families work towards recovery, safety and stability.
