Emergency Food Relief for 104 Families in Grananpin Estate After Heavy Rains and Landslides

Severe weather conditions caused by heavy rainfall and landslides have significantly impacted communities in the Badulla District, with Glen Alpin Estate in the Passara Divisional Secretariat among the affected areas. Landslides, disrupted transport routes and power outages left families struggling to access essential goods and manage daily needs.

In response to this emergency, Vanni Hope Australia carried out a targeted food relief intervention to support families during this critical period.

Situation Overview

Approximately 150 families, representing around 600 individuals, were affected by the disruption caused by heavy rains and landslides in Glen Alpin Estate. The situation resulted in interrupted transport routes, electricity outages, temporary shelter challenges, and limited access to food, clothing and basic necessities.

These conditions made it difficult for families to cook, obtain supplies and maintain normal daily routines.

Emergency Food Relief Intervention

To address immediate food insecurity, dry-food supplies were provided to 104 families, benefiting approximately 470 individuals. This intervention was carried out in partnership with Gandhi Illam and implemented by Vanni Hope Australia.

The timely distribution helped families meet their basic food needs while infrastructure and services began to recover.

Community Response and Impact

Children and families expressed happiness and gratitude for the assistance, sharing that the food supplies brought comfort and a sense of normalcy during a challenging time. Beyond addressing immediate needs, the intervention helped strengthen community resilience by supporting households as they navigated ongoing disruptions caused by the disaster.

Supporting Ongoing Emergency Response

This food relief initiative forms part of Vanni Hope’s broader Cyclone Ditwah emergency response across Sri Lanka. As recovery continues, further support will be required to assist affected communities and ensure families are not left behind.
