Restoring Hope Through Clean Water for 63 Cyclone Affected Families in Kandy

A clean drinking water supply project was officially handed over to 63 families living in temporary shelters in Madhumbara Estate, Rangala Division, Kandy District, providing an essential source of safe and reliable water to a community severely affected by Cyclone Ditwah.

Following the disaster, access to basic necessities became an ongoing challenge for affected families. The new water supply system helped address one of the community’s most urgent needs while improving everyday living conditions for families rebuilding their lives.

Bringing Safe Water Directly to Families

Under the initiative, clean drinking water was conveyed to the community through a pipeline extending approximately two kilometres. Individual water storage tanks were provided to households, allowing each family to access and safely store water for their daily needs.

The infrastructure provided a more dependable source of water for families living in temporary accommodation and reduced the difficulties associated with accessing adequate water following the cyclone. The wider project objectives prioritized safe and functional water access alongside improvements to health, hygiene, and comfort.

Improving Health, Hygiene and Daily Living

Reliable access to clean water plays an essential role in maintaining personal hygiene, preparing food, supporting sanitation, and protecting the health of families. For households already facing displacement and difficult living conditions, dependable water access represented an important step towards restoring normality.

The project helped ease some of the daily hardships experienced by families while creating a safer and more dignified environment within the temporary settlement.

Supporting Recovery After Cyclone Ditwah

The impact of Cyclone Ditwah left families in Madhumbara Estate facing significant disruption and uncertainty. While temporary shelters provided immediate accommodation, access to essential infrastructure remained necessary to support their longer term recovery.

Establishing a reliable water system therefore represented more than an infrastructure improvement. It contributed to restoring dignity, strengthening community wellbeing, and helping families move forward with greater security and resilience, outcomes that reflected the broader objectives of the water supply initiative.

Creating a Sustainable Source of Support

Beyond responding to an immediate humanitarian need, the project created infrastructure capable of providing continued benefits to the affected community. The pipeline and household storage system established a practical foundation for more consistent access to water while reducing the challenges families had faced in meeting this essential daily need.

The original project framework also emphasized community participation, responsible water use, maintenance, and local ownership as important elements in sustaining water infrastructure over the longer term.

A Meaningful Contribution to Community Recovery

This essential humanitarian initiative was generously sponsored by Priyani Singanayagam, family and friends and implemented by Vanni Hope.

Their support helped provide 63 cyclone affected families with reliable access to clean drinking water at a time when it was deeply needed, contributing to improved health, dignity, and living conditions while bringing renewed hope to families recovering from the effects of Cyclone Ditwah.
