The recent impact of Cyclone Ditwah brought heavy rainfall and widespread flooding across the hill-country regions of Sri Lanka, with the Nuwara Eliya District among the hardest affected. Communities in Dessford Upper Division and Dessford Lower Division, located within the Nuwara Eliya Divisional Secretariat, experienced severe flooding and landslides, resulting in displacement, loss of food stocks, and limited access to daily essentials.
To support the community during this crisis, Vanni Hope provided emergency dry-ration packs to affected families, ensuring they received immediate nutritional support and relief.
Supporting 80 Displaced Families
A total of 80 families were displaced from the Dessford Estate Upper and Lower Divisions and are now taking temporary shelter at CP/N Abbotsford Tamil Vidyalayam (T.V.) School. With homes flooded and food reserves destroyed, dry-ration packs played a crucial role in helping families stabilise during the earliest and most vulnerable stage of displacement.

This timely relief intervention helped families access food while weather conditions remained unstable and movement was restricted. Vanni Hope’s response ensured that vulnerable groups, such as children, elderly residents, and women, received immediate care and support.
Looking Ahead
Although dry-ration packs have provided essential support for now, the road to recovery is ongoing. Families have lost belongings, food supplies, and safe housing, and will require continued assistance until conditions improve and rebuilding can take place.
Vanni Hope remains committed to supporting these families as part of our broader Cyclone Ditwah Emergency Response, reaching communities across multiple affected districts.
