Vanni Hope providing emergency flood relief to displaced families from Palmerston and Kalganda Estates in Nuwara Eliya after Cyclone Ditwah

Emergency Response Flood Relief for 20 Displaced Families in Palmerston and Kalganda Estates After Cyclone Ditwah

Cyclone Ditwah has caused severe flooding across several regions of Sri Lanka, leaving many families struggling to cope with sudden displacement and loss of access to basic necessities. Among the affected areas are Palmerston Estate and Kalganda Estate, located under the Thalawakelle Divisional Secretariat in the Nuwara Eliya District.

To support families during this challenging time, Vanni Hope provided essential flood relief to help them meet their immediate needs as they begin the recovery process.

Supporting 20 Families Displaced by Flooding

A total of 20 families from Palmerston and Kalganda Estates were displaced as floodwaters rose quickly, damaging homes and making it unsafe for residents to remain in their communities. These families are now taking temporary shelter at the Palmerston Factory, where they are staying until conditions improve.

Vanni Hope stepped in promptly to ensure each displaced family received emergency support. Our team worked closely with estate representatives and community members to deliver essential relief items that could help families stabilise their daily needs during the critical first days after displacement.

Providing Essential Support When It Matters Most

The floods triggered by Cyclone Ditwah disrupted access to food, clean water and other basic necessities. Many families were forced to leave their homes with little time to prepare, making emergency relief vital for their safety and wellbeing.

Vanni Hope’s intervention provided

  • Essential relief packs for 20 displaced families
  • Priority care for vulnerable groups such as children and elderly residents
  • Coordination with community stakeholders for efficient and fair distribution

This immediate support brought comfort and security to families who suddenly found themselves without access to basic supplies, helping them navigate an uncertain and stressful period.

Our team also visited homes damaged by the cyclone for evaluation for rebuilding via our Shelter For Life projects.

Our Ongoing Commitment to Flood-Affected Communities

The relief distributed in Palmerston and Kalganda Estates forms part of Vanni Hope’s broader emergency response to Cyclone Ditwah, which continues to impact communities across the country. As damages and displacement numbers grow, Vanni Hope remains dedicated to expanding emergency interventions and supporting the long-term recovery of affected families.

We will continue to stand with communities in Nuwara Eliya and beyond as they work to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of this disaster.
