Access to food and essential supplies was completely cut off for families in Dothal Oya Estate, located under the Aranayaka Divisional Secretariat in the Kegalle District, after days of heavy rainfall triggered flooding and landslides across the area. Homes were damaged, access routes were blocked, and many families were forced to remain indoors or relocate to temporary shelters due to unsafe conditions.
In response to this emergency, Vanni Hope carried out a food relief intervention to support families who had been isolated and left without access to basic necessities.
Situation Overview
A total of 30 families, comprising 95 individuals, were affected by flooding and landslides in Dothal Oya Estate. Families were temporarily sheltering in community spaces, schools and nearby safe houses as access to food and essential goods became severely restricted.
Flooded and damaged internal roads made travel impossible, leading to immediate food insecurity across the community.
Emergency Food Relief Intervention
To address urgent needs, Vanni Hope distributed dry rations and emergency food items to 30 affected families, ensuring short-term food security during a period of extreme vulnerability.
The community had been completely isolated due to landslides and had not received any food assistance prior to Vanni Hope’s arrival. An earlier attempt by an external support team to deliver aid was unsuccessful due to transportation difficulties, which resulted in food supplies being damaged and unusable.
Families expressed deep gratitude for the timely support, sharing that the assistance arrived at a critical moment and helped relieve immediate hardship.
Observations and Ongoing Challenges
Despite the successful distribution, several challenges remain within the community:
- Continuous rainfall continues to limit movement and access
- Landslides and flooded roads delay further assistance
- Families have requested additional support, including hygiene items, bedding and clothing
These challenges highlight the need for continued monitoring and follow-up assistance as recovery efforts progress.
Continuing Support for Recovery
The food relief intervention provided vital assistance to 95 individuals affected by flooding and landslides in Dothal Oya Estate. While immediate food needs have been addressed, continued humanitarian support will be essential to support full recovery and restore stability within the community.
