Heavy and continuous rainfall across the Trincomalee District caused sudden and dangerous flooding across multiple areas within the Muthur DS Division, leaving families cut off from food, clean water and basic household necessities. Among the worst affected was Sahayapuram Village, where rising water levels damaged homes, destroyed stored food supplies and forced many residents to evacuate for their safety.
When the situation escalated, Vanni Hope responded immediately, providing essential emergency food assistance to help stabilise families during the most critical period of displacement.
Supporting 100 Families With Urgent Food Relief
To ensure households could access food during the first days of the flood, Vanni Hope distributed 100 dry-food packs to families in Sahayapuram. The sudden flooding left many residents unable to leave their homes, while others were forced to seek refuge in community buildings, schools or the homes of relatives.
These food packs helped bridge a life-sustaining gap while families waited for water levels to recede and normal access to stores and daily resources could resume.
Situation Overview
- Location: Sahayapuram Village, Muthur DS Division
- District: Trincomalee
- Emergency Type: Flooding and heavy rainfall

The flooding not only affected day-to-day life, but also created uncertainty around safety, food security and sanitation. Emergency relief was necessary to protect the wellbeing of vulnerable families — especially children, elderly individuals and women, who were at increased risk during displacement.
The Road to Recovery
While immediate relief has helped stabilise families in the short term, continued support will be needed as communities recover from the damage to property, storage foods and household essentials. Vanni Hope will continue monitoring conditions as part of our broader Cyclone Ditwah Emergency Response across Sri Lanka.
