Emergency food relief distribution by Vanni Hope Sri Lanka to flood- and landslide-affected families in Delketh Estate, Kalutara District after Cyclone Ditwah

Emergency Food Relief for 31 Families in Dalkeith Estate After Flooding and Landslides

Severe rainfall triggered flooding and landslides across parts of the Kalutara District, with Dalkeith Estate, located in the Princelyon Division under the Palindanuwara Divisional Secretariat, among the affected communities. Rising water levels and unstable ground conditions damaged homes, destroyed stored food supplies and restricted movement, placing families in an extremely vulnerable situation.

In response to these urgent needs, Vanni Hope carried out an emergency food relief intervention to support affected households during the initial phase of the disaster.

Supporting 31 Affected Families

A total of 31 families, comprising 102 individuals, were impacted by the flooding and landslides in Dalkeith Estate. Many families were confined indoors for safety or temporarily relocated to community spaces, schools and nearby safe houses due to unsafe living conditions.

With access to food and essential goods severely limited, immediate assistance was critical to help families cope during this period of displacement.

Emergency Food Relief Intervention

To address urgent food insecurity, Vanni Hope distributed dry-ration packs and emergency food items to all 31 affected families. This timely support helped stabilise household food needs while families navigated the early stages of recovery.

Despite challenges caused by flooded internal roads and ongoing rainfall, distributions were carried out to ensure no affected household was left unsupported.

Observations and Ongoing Challenges

While the intervention provided essential relief, several challenges remain within the community:

  • Continuous rainfall continues to limit movement and access
  • Flooded internal roads delayed distribution efforts
  • Families have requested further assistance, including hygiene items, bedding and clothing

These challenges highlight the need for continued monitoring and follow-up support as recovery efforts progress.

Continuing Support for Recovery

The emergency food relief intervention provided vital assistance to 102 individuals affected by flooding and landslides in Dalkeith Estate. While immediate food needs have been addressed, sustained humanitarian support will be essential to ensure families can recover safely and with dignity.

Vanni Hope remains committed to standing with affected communities as part of our broader Cyclone Ditwah emergency response across Sri Lanka.
