Access to daily food, electricity and transport was severely disrupted for families in Gonakelle Estate, located under the Nuwara Eliya Divisional Secretariat in the Nuwara Eliya District, after days of heavy rainfall triggered landslides across the area. Unsafe conditions and damaged infrastructure made it difficult for households to manage basic daily needs.
In response to this emergency, Vanni Hope carried out a food relief intervention to support affected families during this challenging period.
Situation Overview
Approximately 200 families, representing around 650 individuals, were impacted by heavy rains and landslides in Gonakelle Estate. The situation resulted in interrupted transport routes, electricity outages, temporary shelter challenges, and limited access to food, clothing and other basic necessities.
These disruptions placed significant pressure on families, particularly those already facing vulnerability.
Emergency Food Relief Intervention
To address immediate food insecurity, dry-food supplies were provided to 84 families, benefiting approximately 320 individuals. This timely intervention helped households meet their basic food needs while access routes and services remained disrupted.
The distribution also provided reassurance and stability to families during a period of uncertainty.
Community Response and Impact
Children and families expressed happiness and gratitude for the support, sharing that the food supplies brought comfort and a sense of normalcy despite the ongoing challenges. Beyond addressing immediate needs, the intervention helped strengthen community resilience as families continued to cope with damaged infrastructure and limited services.
Continuing Support
This food relief effort forms part of Vanni Hope’s broader emergency response to severe weather impacts across Sri Lanka. While immediate needs have been addressed, continued support will be important as families work towards recovery and stability.
