Heavy and continuous rainfall across the Kegalle District due to Cyclone Ditwah has triggered severe landslides and flooding in the Galigamuwa AGA Division, with the Ambanpitiya No. 2 Division among the hardest hit. The rapid and dangerous ground movement forced 51 families, totalling 191 individuals, to leave their homes for their safety.
These affected families have been temporarily relocated to Ambanpitiya Tamil Vidyalayam, which is being managed as an emergency shelter by local authorities.
Vanni Hope’s Immediate Emergency Response
Recognising the urgent need for support, we responded quickly by providing emergency food relief to all displaced families. Food packs were delivered directly to the shelter, ensuring that children, elderly individuals and women received immediate assistance during the most critical phase of the crisis.
This timely support helped stabilise the food needs of the families while they adjusted to temporary living conditions.
Ongoing Challenges at the Temporary Shelter
All 51 families continue to stay at Ambanpitiya Tamil Vidyalayam, where access to essential services remains limited. The ongoing rainfall and unstable ground conditions make returning home unsafe.
Urgent needs that still require ongoing support include:
- Food and clean drinking water
- Sanitation and hygiene supplies
- Bedding and sleeping materials
- Medical support
Vanni Hope continues to work with local authorities to monitor the situation and explore safe, long-term options for the affected families.
The Need for Continued Support
The landslide and flooding have caused significant hardship for this community. While Vanni Hope’s emergency food relief has provided vital immediate assistance to 191 displaced individuals, additional humanitarian support is essential to ensure their ongoing safety, dignity, and wellbeing.
Vanni Hope remains committed to supporting these families as part of our broader emergency response to severe weather events across the island.
