Emergency food, clothing and toy distribution by Vanni Hope to families in Loolecondera Estate after heavy rains and landslides

Emergency Food, Clothing and Toy Relief for Families in Loolecondera Estate After Heavy Rains and Landslides

Heavy rainfall and landslides caused widespread disruption across Loolecondera Estate, located under the Hanguranketa Divisional Secretariat, on the border of the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya Districts. Landslides, damaged access routes and electricity outages significantly affected estate families, limiting their ability to cook, obtain supplies and manage daily needs.

In response to this emergency, Vanni Hope carried out a targeted relief intervention to support affected families during this challenging period.

Situation Overview

Approximately 40 families, representing around 130 individuals, were affected by the heavy rains and landslides in Loolecondera Estate. Community disruptions included interrupted transport, electricity outages, temporary shelter challenges, and limited access to food, clothing and other basic necessities.

These conditions made daily life extremely difficult for families already facing vulnerability.

Emergency Relief Intervention

Emergency relief support was delivered across two key locations within the affected area.

At St. John Bosco’s Church and CP/HK/Aadhavan Vidyalayam in the Hope Estate Grama Niladhari Division, dry-food supplies were provided to 25 families, benefiting approximately 80 individuals. Families in this location were cooking collectively and sharing meals, making coordinated food support essential.

In the Walloya Division of Loolecondera Estate, dry-food supplies were provided to 15 families, benefiting approximately 50 individuals who were directly affected by landslides.

In addition to food assistance, clothing and toys were distributed to children and families, helping meet immediate needs while also providing comfort and emotional relief during a difficult time.

Community Response and Impact

Children and families expressed happiness and gratitude for the assistance, noting that the food, clothing and toys helped restore a sense of normalcy despite ongoing disruptions. The intervention also contributed to strengthening community resilience as families continued to cope with damaged infrastructure and limited access to services.

Standing With Estate Communities

This relief initiative forms part of Vanni Hope’s broader emergency response to severe weather impacts across central Sri Lanka. While immediate needs have been addressed, continued support will be important as families work towards recovery, safety and stability.
