Cyclone Ditwah Emergency Response – Food Relief for 103 Families in Trincomalee District, Sri Lanka

In the immediate aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah, families across the Trincomalee District faced sudden flooding and significant disruption to their daily lives. One of the affected areas was Velankulam Village in the Trincomalee Town and Gravets DS Division. To support the community during this critical time, Vanni Hope Sri Lanka initiated an emergency food relief intervention to assist families in urgent need.

As part of this first phase of assistance, we provided food packs to 103 families in Velankulam. This marks the beginning of a much broader emergency response to Cyclone Ditwah that will continue across the region.

Situation Overview

Continuous heavy rainfall caused severe flooding throughout Velankulam. Many families were forced to evacuate their homes due to unsafe conditions, with access to food, clean drinking water and basic essential items suddenly disrupted. Children, elderly individuals and women were among the most vulnerable during this crisis.

Vanni Hope Sri Lanka’s Emergency Response

Understanding the urgent need for support, Vanni Hope Sri Lanka mobilised quickly to deliver emergency food packs to every affected household in Velankulam. Each family received items valued at Rs. 5,000, providing immediate stability and helping them navigate the difficult early days following the cyclone.

Our response included

  • Providing food packs to all 103 families in Velankulam
  • Prioritising vulnerable groups to ensure safety and wellbeing
  • Working closely with community leaders to ensure smooth and complete distribution

This quick action helped families withstand the initial shock of the disaster while longer term recovery and rehabilitation efforts were being planned.

Impact on the Community

The timely delivery of these food packs offered essential relief to families who suddenly found themselves without access to basic supplies. Parents were able to feed their children, elderly individuals received care and the community felt supported in a moment of uncertainty.
