As heavy rainfall triggered flooding and landslides across parts of the Kalutara District, families living in Eduragala Estate under the Ingiriya Divisional Secretariat faced sudden disruption to their daily lives. Floodwaters damaged homes and food supplies, while unstable conditions limited movement and access to essential goods.
In response to this emergency, Vanni Hope carried out a food relief intervention to support families during this critical period.
Situation on the Ground
A total of 19 families, representing 65 individuals, were affected by flooding and landslides in Eduragala Estate. Many households were confined indoors or forced to move into temporary shelters, including community spaces, schools and nearby safe houses. Access to food and basic necessities became increasingly difficult as internal roads flooded and rainfall continued.
Emergency Food Relief Intervention
To address immediate food insecurity, dry rations and emergency food items were distributed to 19 affected families. This timely assistance ensured short-term food security while families remained displaced or unable to safely return to normal routines.
The distribution helped ease pressure on households that had lost stored food and were unable to travel to obtain supplies.
Ongoing Challenges
Despite the delivery of food assistance, conditions in the area remain challenging. Continuous rainfall has restricted movement and delayed recovery efforts. Families have also identified ongoing needs for hygiene items, bedding and clothing as they continue to cope with displacement and damage to their homes.
Standing With Affected Families
This intervention provided vital support to 65 individuals during a period of high vulnerability, helping families stabilise their most immediate needs. Vanni Hope continues to monitor the situation closely and remains committed to supporting communities as recovery efforts progress.
