Access to safe shelter and daily food was suddenly disrupted for families across parts of the Nuwara Eliya District after days of intense rainfall triggered landslides and flooding. Communities in Wattegodde Estate (Yoxford Division) and Kalukele Division were among those forced to relocate to temporary shelters as homes were damaged and living conditions became unsafe.
In response, Vanni Hope Sri Lanka carried out targeted food relief interventions to support displaced families during this period of significant disruption and distress.
Emergency Response in Wattegodde Estate, Yoxford Division
Severe rainfall caused multiple landslides in the Wattegodde Estate area, damaging homes and forcing residents to relocate to temporary shelters, including Butterfly Preschool in Wattegodde.
A total of 51 families were affected, with 20 houses sustaining damage. Many families lost their basic belongings and required immediate assistance to meet daily needs.
Vanni Hope Sri Lanka provided urgent food relief to 20 families, supplying dry rations and essential food items. Community members cooked collectively at the temporary shelter, ensuring meals could be prepared and shared safely during displacement.
Despite this support, families continued to face challenges including ongoing rainfall, blocked access routes, emotional distress, and shortages of hygiene items, bedding and shelter-related support.

In this area, 25 families, comprising 80 individuals, were affected. Many lost essential belongings and required immediate support to meet basic needs.

Families here faced similar challenges, including persistent rainfall, blocked access routes, emotional trauma, and limited availability of hygiene items, bedding and adequate shelter conditions.
Supporting Families Through Crisis and Recovery
These two emergency interventions provided essential short-term support to families affected by landslides and heavy rainfall across the Nuwara Eliya District. The assistance helped stabilise food security, offered comfort to children and families, and reduced immediate hardship during a highly distressing period.
While urgent food needs have been addressed, continued support will be important to improve shelter conditions, provide psychosocial assistance, and assist families as recovery and resettlement efforts continue.
