New Shelter Brings Security and Dignity to a Family in Trincomalee

A vulnerable family of five in Valaithoddam, Mavadichenai, Verugal, Trincomalee District received support to establish a safe and permanent home, providing greater security, stability, and dignity for the parents and their three children. The housing initiative was undertaken after the family had spent years living in a small and poorly constructed hut that could not adequately protect them from difficult weather conditions.

The family depended primarily on irregular daily wage and agricultural work, leaving them with limited financial capacity to construct suitable housing independently. Despite these challenges, they owned a small piece of land, creating an opportunity for housing assistance to provide a lasting improvement to their living conditions.

Living Without Adequate Shelter

Before receiving support, the family’s existing shelter presented significant challenges. Rainwater entered the home during wet weather, while the interior became extremely uncomfortable during periods of intense heat. The limited living space also contributed to overcrowding and concerns surrounding hygiene and security.

These conditions were particularly concerning for the family’s three children, aged 11 years, three years, and two months at the time of the project assessment. The inadequate shelter exposed the children to health and safety risks while affecting the overall wellbeing of the household.

Creating Stability for a Young Family

The family’s financial circumstances had made constructing a permanent home extremely difficult. Both parents relied on daily wage employment, with the mother undertaking work including groundnut plucking and small scale agricultural activities. Their irregular household income remained insufficient to cover essential expenses while also financing the construction of a secure home.

Providing appropriate shelter therefore addressed one of the family’s most pressing needs and created a stronger foundation from which they could care for their children and work towards a more stable future.

Improving Safety, Health and Dignity

Safe housing provides much more than physical protection. For this family, improved shelter offered an opportunity for better hygiene, greater security, and a more stable environment in which their children could grow and develop.

The housing support was designed to reduce the family’s exposure to extreme weather and poor sanitation while improving their overall dignity and sense of security. These improvements were expected to reduce longer term social and economic vulnerability while creating lasting benefits for the household.

Building a Stronger Foundation for the Future

The project represented an important transformation in the family’s living circumstances. Having a secure place to call home provided greater peace of mind for the parents while creating a safer environment for their children.

By addressing an essential need that the family could not meet independently, the initiative helped provide greater stability and improved living conditions that will continue to support the family’s wellbeing into the future.

A Generous Contribution Towards Lasting Change

This meaningful housing initiative was generously sponsored by the Engineers Charity Fund in Australia and implemented by Vanni Hope. The project formed part of Vanni Hope’s commitment to providing safe shelter for vulnerable families and creating lasting improvements to their living conditions.

Through this generous support, a family that had previously faced insecure housing conditions was given the opportunity to live with greater safety, dignity, comfort, and hope for the future.
