We are proud to announce the upcoming Shelter for Life project in Sankamankandi, Pottuvil, Ampara District, Sri Lanka. This initiative, generously sponsored by Dr. Kandiah Sundaralingam from Australia, is dedicated to providing a permanent, safe, and dignified home for Mrs. K. Thavamalar, her husband, and their three children.
From Hardship to Hope: Addressing the Urgent Need for Safe Shelter
For years, the Thavamalar family has been living in a small, temporary hut in unsafe and inadequate conditions. With Mr. Satheeskumar working as a day laborer and often unable to secure consistent employment, the family’s income has not been sufficient to improve their living situation. The absence of a secure home has left them vulnerable to weather, environmental hazards, and health risks.
This project was identified during a Vanni Hope field visit, where the urgent need for safe housing in Sankamankandi became clear. Many families in this conflict-affected rural community face similar challenges, with poverty, limited economic opportunities, and inadequate shelter shaping their daily reality.
A Comprehensive Approach to Building a Lasting Home
To address this urgent need, Vanni Hope’s Shelter for Life project will construct a durable and affordable home tailored to the family’s needs. The house will feature:
- Two well-built rooms to serve as a bedroom and living space
- An open veranda with asbestos sheet roofing for shade and community gatherings
- Concrete-rendered floors for durability and safety
- Quality materials and construction methods to ensure the home’s longevity
The design balances affordability, practicality, and resilience, ensuring the family has a secure place to live without the burden of high maintenance costs.
Transforming Lives Through Safe and Stable Housing
The completion of this home will provide the Thavamalar family with:
- Protection from harsh weather and environmental hazards
- A stable environment for the children to grow, study, and thrive
- Improved health and hygiene with safer living conditions
- A renewed sense of dignity, stability, and hope for the future
With the security of a permanent home, the family can focus on improving their livelihoods and building a better future together.
