Strengthening Emergency Care at Annamalai Hospital, Kalmunai

We are proud to announce the upcoming Health Project: Strengthening the Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU) at Annamalai Hospital, Kalmunai, Ampara District, Sri Lanka. This initiative, generously sponsored by Mr. Ashwin Sivaratnam from Melbourne, is dedicated to improving life-saving emergency services for over 5,000 people in the Navithanveli DS Division.

From Struggles to Solutions: Addressing the Gaps in Emergency Care

Annamalai Hospital is a Type C divisional hospital that manages between 4 to 5 emergency admissions every day. Despite the dedication of its three Medical Officers, the hospital has been operating with limited equipment, making it difficult to properly stabilize trauma cases, cardiac emergencies, and critically ill patients.

The absence of a fully equipped ETU has often resulted in preventable risks, delayed treatment, and unnecessary patient transfers to distant facilities. During a recent Vanni Hope field visit, the urgent need to strengthen this unit became clear, highlighting the importance of immediate action.

A Comprehensive Approach to Strengthening the ETU

To address this urgent gap in healthcare delivery, Vanni Hope’s project will provide essential emergency equipment tailored to the hospital’s needs. The approved items include:

  • Orthopaedic splints

  • Cervical collars (soft and hard)

  • Elastoplast

  • Endotracheal (ET) tubes

  • Crepe bandages

  • Suction tubes                                                                                                                                         These vital supplies will allow medical staff to quickly stabilize patients, improve trauma management, and deliver safe and timely emergency interventions. By equipping the ETU with these tools, the hospital can provide more effective care and reduce preventable complications.

Transforming Lives Through Accessible Emergency Care

The strengthened ETU at Annamalai Hospital will bring life-changing benefits to the community, including:

  • Improved emergency response for trauma, cardiac, and acute medical cases
  • Reduced morbidity and mortality through timely interventions
  • Decreased need for transfers to higher-level hospitals
  • Increased trust in local healthcare, giving families peace of mind knowing that emergency care is accessible close to home

By ensuring access to better-equipped emergency services, the project will directly improve the health, safety, and confidence of rural and plantation communities in the Ampara District.

With Gratitude and a Shared Commitment

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Ashwin Sivaratnam from Melbourne, whose generous sponsorship has made this vital healthcare project possible. Your support is strengthening the foundations of rural healthcare and bringing hope to communities that need it most.

We also acknowledge the efforts of our field staff, medical professionals, and community partners who are working tirelessly to ensure that this project is implemented with care, efficiency, and accountability.

At Vanni Hope, we believe that access to quality healthcare is a right, not a privilege. This project is a testament to the transformative power of compassion and collaboration. Together, we can continue to strengthen healthcare, uplift communities, and create lasting change, one project at a time.
