We are proud to announce the successful launch of the Capacity Building and Empowerment Project of Women Development Society in Kovil Kudiyiruppu, Chavakatcheri, Jaffna District, Sri Lanka. This initiative, generously sponsored by the Sharainya Mahesan Foundation, is designed to empower 25 economically disadvantaged rural women through access to microcredit, targeted skills training, and long-term support for sustainable livelihoods.
From Poverty to Possibility: Addressing the Challenges of Rural Women
In Kovil Kudiyiruppu, decades of economic hardship and the lingering effects of the civil conflict have left many families struggling to meet their basic needs. Fishing and agriculture form the backbone of the local economy, but limited access to markets, lack of business knowledge, and minimal capital prevent many from achieving financial stability.
Women, in particular, face unique barriers. Despite their active role in the local economy through poultry farming, tailoring, handicrafts, and other small-scale enterprises, they often lack the resources to expand their ventures and earn a sustainable income. This project seeks to bridge that gap, providing women with the tools, funding, and knowledge they need to thrive.
A Two-Part Approach: Financial Access and Capacity Building
To address these challenges, Vanni Hope has implemented a two-pronged approach:
- Revolving Loan Fund – 25 women from the Kovil Kudiyiruppu Rural Women Development Society will receive small loans to start or expand microenterprises such as poultry farming, tailoring, and grocery retail. The loans will be repaid with a minimal interest rate, allowing the fund to be recycled and benefit more women over time.
- Skills Training – Participants will undergo training in small business management, bookkeeping, marketing, leadership, and financial literacy. These skills will enable them to plan, manage, and grow their businesses effectively, ensuring long-term sustainability.
Additionally, the project provides essential materials such as membership and loan application forms, ledgers, calculators, and other stationery to support the smooth and transparent operation of the society.
Building Resilience and Economic Independence
The benefits of this project go far beyond financial assistance. By equipping women with both capital and skills, the initiative empowers them to:
- Establish sustainable income sources for their families
- Improve household living standards
- Gain confidence in managing their finances and enterprises
- Build collective resilience through group-based support networks
- Contribute to the long-term economic growth of their community
Furthermore, the women have committed to contributing 5% of their monthly income to an emergency welfare fund, providing a safety net for members during times of crisis.
With Gratitude and Determination to Continue
We extend our deepest appreciation to the Sharainya Mahesan Foundation for their generosity in sponsoring this initiative. Your support has given women in one of Sri Lanka’s most underserved rural communities the chance to break free from poverty, build thriving enterprises, and create a brighter future for themselves and their families.
We also acknowledge the dedication of our field staff, local partners, and community leaders, whose collaboration has ensured the project’s successful launch.
At Vanni Hope, we believe that empowering women is key to uplifting entire communities. This project stands as a testament to what can be achieved when compassion meets opportunity. Together, we can continue to create pathways to economic independence, dignity, and lasting change, one woman at a time.
