Empowering Women, Building Skills and Strengthening Livelihoods in Trincomalee

A Capacity Building Training Programme was successfully conducted for members of the Puthumai Pannai Women’s Society in Kadakaraichenai, Muthur, Trincomalee District, strengthening the skills and confidence of women actively working to improve their livelihoods and their families’ economic wellbeing.

The programme brought together 54 active members of the Women’s Society and focused on leadership, teamwork, communication, problem solving, confidence, and entrepreneurship. It formed part of the wider effort to strengthen sustainable income generation and women led livelihood development within the community. Vanni Hope’s longstanding project in the area was established to strengthen rural livelihoods, local entrepreneurship, and income generation among women

Building Confidence Through Practical Learning

Rather than relying solely on traditional training methods, the programme incorporated interactive games, group activities, and practical learning sessions that encouraged women to participate, communicate, and work together.

These activities provided opportunities for members to strengthen their leadership and collaboration skills while developing greater confidence in sharing ideas, solving problems, and supporting one another. The programme concluded with positive feedback from participants, who expressed appreciation for the knowledge and experiences gained.

Supporting Women Led Livelihoods

Members of the Puthumai Pannai Women’s Society were involved in a variety of income generating activities, including tailoring, retail businesses, livestock rearing, and home gardening. Their work reflected the diverse ways women within the community were building livelihoods and contributing to their households.

The broader Vanni Hope initiative was designed to improve the financial and technical capacity of rural women while supporting agriculture, livestock development, business skills, and access to sustainable income opportunities.

Strengthening Opportunities Through a Revolving Fund

Alongside capacity building, the Women’s Society had benefited from a revolving loan fund, providing members with greater opportunities to develop and sustain their livelihood activities. The revolving model was designed so that repayments could be reused to support additional livelihood initiatives, helping create a more sustainable source of community based financial assistance.

This approach supported greater ownership among participants while helping women strengthen their businesses, increase production, and work towards greater economic independence.

Creating Stronger Communities Through Women’s Leadership

The training extended beyond individual skill development by encouraging cooperation, mutual support, and stronger relationships among members of the Women’s Society. By strengthening leadership and entrepreneurial abilities, participants were better equipped to develop their livelihoods while contributing to the long term development of their community.

The wider project recognized that strengthening women’s economic opportunities could contribute to increased household income, improved living conditions, and greater resilience among rural families.

A Collaborative Commitment to Women’s Empowerment

The Capacity Building Training Programme was conducted in collaboration between Vanni Hope and the Aram Initiative, reflecting a shared commitment to empowering women through practical skills, confidence building, and sustainable livelihood development.

Through continued investment in training, entrepreneurship, and community led economic opportunities, the initiative helped women build upon their existing strengths and take meaningful steps towards more secure livelihoods for themselves, their families, and their wider community.
