Emergency Shelter Project Provides a Permanent Home for Vulnerable Family in Batticaloa

As part of Vanni Hope’s Rapid Infrastructure Repairs under our Emergency Response initiatives, we are proud to announce the successful completion of a permanent housing project for a vulnerable family in Mankerni, Vaharai, Batticaloa District. This initiative also aligns with our Shelter for Life Project under the Community Development category, addressing critical housing needs for those facing hardship.

Transforming Lives Through Permanent Housing

This project aimed to support the Kandasamy family, who were living in an unsafe and inadequate hut after their home was completely destroyed due to an electrical malfunction. Within just one month, we constructed a durable, permanent house, significantly improving their living conditions and providing the family with a sense of stability and safety.

The home was constructed using high-quality materials under the close supervision of Vanni Hope’s project officer, ensuring it meets all structural and durability standards. The design also incorporated key features to improve the family’s quality of life and access to essential services such as sanitation and water.

Collaborative Efforts and Beneficiary Selection

This project was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Dr. Malathi Waran from Australia, whose contributions provided the financial support necessary to bring this initiative to life.

The selection of the beneficiary family was carried out in partnership with local Grama Niladhari officers and the Divisional Secretariat, ensuring that aid was directed to those most in need. The process involved a thorough review of the family’s economic status, land ownership, and living conditions.

Positive Impact on the Community

The successful completion of this project has had a ripple effect on the broader community in Mankerny:

  1. Improved living standards: The Kandasamy family now has a safe, secure, and dignified living environment.
  2. Enhanced community well-being: Access to improved housing contributes to better physical and mental health outcomes.
  3. Inspiration for further projects: The project has highlighted the need for similar initiatives to support other vulnerable families in the region.

The beneficiary family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Vanni Hope and the sponsor for the life-changing impact of this project.

Building a Brighter Future

This project is a testament to Vanni Hope’s commitment to supporting vulnerable families and creating sustainable solutions for long-term community development. Through initiatives like this, we aim to improve living standards and promote well-being for those who need it most.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone involved, especially our sponsor, Dr. Malathi Waran, for making this project a reality. Together, we can continue to bring hope and stability to communities across Sri Lanka.
