A family of four in Ponnagar, Mulliyavalai, Mullaitivu District has been able to move into a safer and more secure home following the completion of renovations to their previously unfinished house.
For V. Kasthoori and her family, reaching this point had been a long process. The family had been living in a temporary thatched shelter while working towards the goal of having a permanent home of their own. Her husband, a daily wage labourer, had begun construction using the family’s limited savings, but financial difficulties eventually brought the work to a halt.
A Home Started With Hope
Despite their limited income, the family had taken the initiative to begin constructing a permanent house themselves. Their circumstances, however, made completing such a significant undertaking extremely difficult.
With household income dependent on daily wage employment, the family did not have sufficient financial resources to finish the house. This left them with an incomplete home while they continued living in their temporary shelter.
Living Through Difficult Conditions
Life in the thatched shelter became particularly challenging during periods of heavy rain and hot weather. Without the protection and security of a completed permanent structure, changing weather conditions had a direct impact on the family’s comfort and everyday living environment.
For the four family members, completing the house therefore represented much more than finishing construction. It meant gaining greater protection, security and stability in their daily lives.
Completing What the Family Had Begun
Through the Shelter for Life initiative, assistance was provided to complete the remaining work on the family’s house.
Building upon the effort and resources the family had already invested, the support enabled an unfinished structure to become a safe and functional home. The family could finally leave behind the difficult conditions of their temporary shelter and benefit from the security of permanent housing.
A New Sense of Security and Dignity
The completed home has significantly improved the family’s living conditions. They now have a safer and more comfortable environment that provides greater protection during difficult weather and greater security in their everyday lives.
Kasthoori expressed her happiness and gratitude following the completion of the house, particularly after the difficulties her family had experienced while living without adequate housing. Having a permanent home has given the family a greater sense of comfort, dignity and stability.
Supporting a Family’s Path Towards Stability
This housing initiative was generously funded by Vathany Kiritharan and Shoban Kiritharan and implemented by Vanni Hope through its Shelter for Life initiative.
Their support helped the family complete a goal they had already worked hard towards but could not achieve alone because of financial hardship. Today, Kasthoori and her family have a secure place to call home and a stronger foundation from which to move forward.
