For years, Mrs. Kethiswaran Gnanarathy and her family had lived in a temporary tin sheet shelter in Aalankerny, Kinniya, where inadequate housing left them exposed to difficult weather conditions and an uncertain living environment.
As the head of her household, Gnanarathy had faced the challenge of supporting her family while experiencing significant financial hardship. With limited income and ongoing household and educational expenses, constructing a permanent home had remained beyond the family’s financial means.
Through the Shelter for Life initiative, a permanent new house with a toilet facility was constructed for the family, providing them with a safer and more dignified place to call home.
Living Without the Security of a Permanent Home
The family’s previous shelter had provided limited space and protection. During the rainy season, water had leaked through the roof and walls, creating difficult and unsafe conditions, particularly for the children. The household had also lacked its own toilet facility, adding another challenge to their everyday living conditions.
These circumstances had persisted for a prolonged period while financial hardship prevented the family from securing adequate permanent housing.
Creating a Safer Place for the Family
Recognising the family’s urgent housing needs, support was provided to construct a permanent home that offered greater safety, security and comfort.
The completed house also included a toilet facility, addressing an important need that had been absent from the family’s previous living conditions. Together, these improvements created a more suitable and secure environment for the entire household.
Greater Comfort and Security for the Children
The completion of the house was particularly meaningful for the children in the family. Their previous living conditions had exposed them to heavy rain, extreme heat and the insecurity associated with an inadequate temporary structure.
The new permanent home provided the children with a safer and more comfortable environment for their everyday lives and education. For the wider family, the move also brought greater privacy, dignity and peace of mind.
Beginning a New Chapter After Years of Hardship
For Gnanarathy and her family, the completion of the house marked a significant change after years of difficult living conditions.
The family was able to leave behind the vulnerabilities of their temporary tin sheet shelter and move into a permanent home of their own. The completed house provided greater stability and a secure foundation for the family’s future.
A Home Built in Memory
The construction of this permanent home was fully funded by Engineers Charity Fund Australia in memory of the late Dr. R.K. Ilango of Thellippalai through the Shelter for Life initiative.
Through this meaningful contribution, the family received a lasting improvement to their living conditions and a permanent home that provided greater safety, security, comfort and dignity.
