Vanni Hope is proud to announce the successful completion of an initiative to uplift two Moral Development Schools (Araneri schools) in the Batticaloa District. These schools—Sri Vinayagar Araneri School in Mawadichenai and Sithi Vinayagar Araneri School in Karadiyanaru—play a vital role in shaping the character and values of children in the local community.
Why Moral Education Matters
Moral education is a cornerstone of child development. Araneri schools go beyond academic learning to instil discipline, ethics, cultural identity, and religious knowledge in young minds. In underserved areas of Sri Lanka, where access to quality educational infrastructure is limited, these schools act as safe spaces for spiritual and moral growth.
Challenges Faced by These Schools
Until recently, both schools lacked basic classroom facilities. Classes were held under trees or in makeshift shelters without furniture, whiteboards, or sufficient teaching materials. This limited the children’s ability to concentrate, participate, and truly benefit from their learning environment.
Our Intervention
As part of our Community Development Initiatives, Vanni Hope provided key resources to enhance the classroom setting for both schools. These included:
- Whiteboards with stands
- Floor mats and tarpaulin sheets
- Educational and religious learning materials
Over 120 students have directly benefited from this support, and the school communities have expressed deep gratitude for the improvements. Teachers now have better tools to conduct lessons, and students enjoy a more structured and safe environment in which to learn.
Sustainability and Local Ownership
In line with our model of sustainable development, the project included handover and orientation sessions to ensure that the donated materials are maintained and used effectively. The school leadership and local stakeholders have taken full responsibility for the upkeep of the equipment and classroom spaces.
Strengthening Cultural Roots
This project also serves as a reaffirmation of Vanni Hope’s commitment to cultural preservation and inclusive education. In a fast-changing world, preserving moral education for children—particularly in rural areas—is crucial for nurturing future generations who are both skilled and grounded in values.
