We are proud to announce the successful completion of a Water & Sanitation Support Project for the family of Mr. Veerasami Murugavelu, residing in Pottuvil within the Ampara District of Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province. Living under severe economic hardship, the family previously had no access to a proper toilet, relying on nearby forest areas for basic needs, an unsafe and undignified reality that posed daily risks to health, privacy, and personal safety.
This project marks an important step in ensuring that vulnerable families have access to essential sanitation infrastructure, a fundamental requirement for health, dignity, and overall quality of life.
Providing a Safe & Durable Sanitation Facility
Before this intervention, the Murugavelu family faced multiple challenges:
- Lack of a personal toilet
- Exposure to environmental hazards
- Safety concerns for women and children
- Health risks related to open defecation
- Social discomfort and privacy issues
To address these needs, Vanni Hope implemented a comprehensive toilet construction support program that included:
- Construction of a complete toilet unit with secure roofing
- Installation of a septic tank and soakage pit
- Durable block masonry walls and plastering
- A reinforced concrete roof slab
- A squatting pan and standard sanitation fittings
- A steel framed door for safety and privacy
- Locally sourced materials for long term sustainability
These components were developed according to standard technical specifications to ensure functionality, durability, and cultural appropriateness for the family.
Improving Health, Safety & Quality of Life
Access to proper sanitation plays a vital role in improving daily living conditions. Through this project, the family now benefits from:
- Reduced exposure to communicable diseases
- A cleaner and safer household environment
- Improved privacy and dignity for all family members
- Increased safety for women, elders, and children
- Enhanced physical and mental well being
What was once a daily struggle has now become a secure and hygienic space that supports the family’s health and restores their sense of stability.
Supporting Vulnerable Families with Dignified Solutions
Families living in rural and economically challenged communities often lack the resources to construct essential facilities. This project provides long term, sustainable support by ensuring:
- A structurally sound sanitation unit
- A safe foundation and septic system
- Materials and workmanship designed for long term use
- A meaningful uplift that strengthens resilience and daily comfort
Through this initiative, a vulnerable family has received a critical resource that directly improves their living conditions and personal safety.
A Project Made Possible Through Generosity & Compassion
This vital sanitation project was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Mrs. Eeswari Jeganathan (Australia).
Her support enabled:
- Full construction of the toilet unit
- Provision of essential sanitation fittings
- Building of the septic tank and soakage pit
- Long term health and safety benefits for the family
Her compassion has brought dignity, comfort, and stability to a family facing immense hardship, creating lasting positive change in their daily lives.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Eeswari Jeganathan for her unwavering commitment to supporting vulnerable families and promoting well being across Sri Lanka.
