Advancing Mathematics Education in Rural Kandy District

Vanni Hope is proud to announce the successful completion of an Education Support Project at CP/W/Kandakettiya Tamil Primary Vidyalayam, located in Thawalanthenna within the Kandy District of Sri Lanka’s Central Province. Serving 63 students from Grades 1 to 5, this school plays a vital role in supporting children in a rural, economically challenged community where families often face barriers to quality learning resources.

This project represents an important milestone in strengthening foundational mathematics education and ensuring that young learners have access to the tools, materials, and hands on experiences needed to build confidence and academic success.

Providing Essential Mathematics Learning Tools

Before this initiative, students and teachers faced significant shortages of basic mathematical instruments, limiting their ability to engage in practical learning, problem solving activities, and curriculum aligned exercises. To address this gap, Vanni Hope implemented a comprehensive Mathematics Resource Provision program that included:

  • Classroom sets of mathematical instruments
  • Tools to support measurement, geometry, numeracy, and data handling
  • Learning resources for decimal operations, number manipulation, and applied reasoning
  • Materials to enhance visual and tactile learning
  • A new school name board to uplift the learning environment
  • Follow up and monitoring support through Vanni Hope’s implementation team

These resources directly support the national curriculum while enabling teachers to conduct hands on demonstrations, group activities, and real life mathematical applications, essential components of an effective early grade mathematics program.

Strengthening Numeracy Skills & Building Confidence

Mathematics is a core foundation of academic success, and this project directly empowers students to:

  • Improve performance in mathematics examinations
  • Strengthen conceptual understanding through practical tools
  • Increase their comfort with numbers, decimals, and analytical tasks
  • Develop problem-solving and critical thinking abilities
  • Enhance long term pathways to secondary and higher education

For many children in rural areas, access to such learning tools can significantly influence their motivation, self confidence, and future academic progress. By creating a more resource rich classroom environment, this project helps foster a generation of students better equipped for future learning.

Empowering Teachers Through Better Classroom Resources

Teachers in rural schools often work with limited materials, making it difficult to deliver interactive lessons. Through this project, educators at CP/W/Kandakettiya Tamil Primary Vidyalayam now have:

  • The essential tools required for curriculum aligned teaching
  • Greater capacity to conduct practical demonstrations
  • Resources to support group work and activity based learning
  • Stronger classroom engagement and improved lesson planning opportunities

These improvements enhance the teaching learning process and support more consistent, high quality instruction across all primary grades.

A Project Made Possible Through Generosity & Vision

This meaningful educational uplift was made possible through the generous sponsorship of the LAKSHMANA IYER SASITHARAN family from Australia.
Their support enabled:

  • Full provision of mathematical instruments
  • Classroom learning resources
  • A new school name board
  • Project monitoring and sustainability support

Their contribution ensures that 63 young learners in a rural, underserved community now have the learning tools required to build essential numeracy skills and pursue their academic goals with greater confidence.

Vanni Hope extends its heartfelt gratitude to the LAKSHMANA IYER SASITHARAN family for their commitment to strengthening education and empowering children across Sri Lanka.
