Disability child sri lanka, providing toilet for poor family in ampara district

Restoring Dignity for Jenivi’s Family Through Sanitation in Thirukkovil

As part of our Hygiene & Sanitation efforts under the Community Development Initiative, Vanni Hope has successfully completed the construction of a much-needed toilet facility for the family of A. Jenivi in Thirukkovil, Ampara District.

This project was made possible through the generous support of Easwary Jeganathan, in loving memory of N. S. Jeganathan, and implemented by Vanni Hope.

Meeting a Basic Human Need

Jenivi, her husband (a daily wage earner), and their two children had been living without access to a safe and private toilet. The lack of sanitation forced them to rely on neighbours or open areas—compromising their health, dignity, and personal safety.

This situation is sadly common in many rural communities, where economic hardship prevents families from building even the most basic facilities.

What We Delivered

Through this project, the family received:

  • A 5×4 foot permanent toilet structure
  • Properly sealed squatting pan and ventilation system
  • Septic tank with soakage pit and RCC cover slabs
  • Durable GI pipe-framed door for safety and privacy
  • Cultural considerations for long-term usability

This marks a transformative moment for the family—offering a permanent, hygienic facility and a significant improvement in their daily life.

Lasting Community Impact

Beyond addressing a personal need, this project contributes to broader health outcomes by reducing the risk of water-borne and vector-borne diseases. Most importantly, it restores a sense of dignity and security to a family that has struggled for far too long.

Vanni Hope remains committed to building a healthier, more equitable Sri Lanka—one project, one family at a time.
