Vanni Hope is pleased to announce the completion of another Shelter for Life project, this time for the Thuminthala family in Mavadivembu, Chenkalady, Batticaloa District. This life-changing initiative, generously sponsored by the Mr. Vindran Vengadasalam Family from Australia, has provided a vulnerable family of five with a safe, permanent home after years of hardship.
A Family in Urgent Need of Support
M. Thuminthala, her husband Prapakeswaran, their two young daughters, and her elderly mother previously lived in a deteriorating hut that posed significant safety risks. As a day labourer, Prapakeswaran struggled with irregular income, making it impossible for the family to repair or rebuild their home on their own. The structure’s crumbling walls and lack of sanitation exposed the family to danger, stress, and vulnerability, especially during Sri Lanka’s harsh monsoon seasons.
Through Vanni Hope’s assessment and field visits, this family was identified as a priority for support. They owned a plot of land but needed financial and logistical help to make safe housing a reality.
A Durable and Dignified New Home
The newly built house spans a 20 x 20 ft. space and includes a veranda, solid clay brick or cement block walls, a tiled roof, concrete rendering across the floor, and essential fixtures such as four doors and four windows. Importantly, the design prioritised durability and affordability while involving the family in the process, ensuring both community ownership and sustainability.
Key features include:
- Tiled roof construction
- Concrete brick walls
- Raised foundation for durability
- Full cement rendering
- Participation of family members during construction
This simple yet solid structure replaces years of hardship with dignity, comfort, and a renewed sense of safety.

Why Shelter Matters
This project is part of Vanni Hope’s Shelter for Life initiative under our Community Development portfolio. It demonstrates how access to safe and adequate housing can dramatically improve quality of life, especially for families living in rural and post-conflict areas. When people have shelter, they can focus on their livelihoods, education, and health with confidence and stability.
We thank the Mr. Vindran Vengadasalam Family for making this dream a reality for the Thuminthala family. Your generosity has not only built a home—it has restored hope.

Excellent work Vanni Hope! Stumbled across your website when browsing on google and amazing to see the amount of amazing work you do. Building houses is such a fantastic initiative that I’m sure y’all would’ve put a lot of hard work into doing, can’t think of any other charities that do as much of a range and cover as many areas of Sri Lanka as you do. Keep it up!
