Water supply and toilet renovation projects were successfully completed and officially handed over at BD/Sri Ganesha Tamil Vidyalaya in the Pasara Education Zone, Uva Province, and MO/Thiruvalluvar Tamil Maha Vidyalaya in Monaragala District. The improvements addressed important drinking water, sanitation and hygiene needs while creating safer and more supportive learning environments for students.
Prior to the renovations, both schools faced challenges with their sanitation infrastructure. Damaged pipelines, leaking taps, poor drainage, broken facilities and unhygienic conditions affected students’ health, comfort and dignity and created an environment that was not conducive to learning.
Improving Essential Facilities for Students
Access to safe drinking water and functional sanitation facilities is fundamental to a healthy school environment. The completed works strengthened these essential facilities, ensuring students had access to cleaner, safer and more functional spaces throughout the school day.
The renovations were designed to restore sanitation infrastructure and improve hygiene, health and comfort while providing an environment where students could participate in their education with greater safety and dignity.
Supporting Health, Hygiene and Learning
Improved WASH facilities have benefits extending beyond the physical infrastructure itself. Cleaner and more reliable facilities can support better hygiene practices, reduce sanitation related health risks and contribute to students’ overall wellbeing.
By addressing longstanding challenges surrounding water and sanitation, the projects also created conditions that can better support attendance, concentration and academic participation, allowing students to focus on learning within a healthier and more comfortable school environment.
Reaching Rural School Communities
Both schools serve communities where many students come from low income farming, fishing and daily wage earning families. Improving essential school infrastructure therefore represented an important investment in educational environments serving children from economically disadvantaged communities. \
At MO/Thiruvalluvar Tamil Maha Vidyalaya, the project proposal identified 300 students as direct beneficiaries, while BD/Sri Ganesha Tamil Vidyalaya identified 280 students, extending the benefits of improved sanitation facilities across both school communities.
Ensuring Improvements Continue Into the Future
Long term sustainability formed an important part of the initiatives. School caretakers were expected to support the continued maintenance of the renovated facilities, while hygiene awareness activities would encourage students to use them responsibly.
School maintenance resources and community contributions were also identified as important mechanisms for supporting future repairs, helping protect the improvements and ensuring the facilities remain functional for future generations of students.
A Partnership Supporting Healthier Learning Environments
The successful completion and handover of these projects reflected the cooperation of school principals, School Development Associations and the wider school communities, whose involvement helped support the implementation and future sustainability of the improved facilities.
These important water and sanitation initiatives were generously sponsored by SMEC Foundation, Australia and implemented by Vanni Hope. Through improved access to safe drinking water and functional sanitation, students at both schools can benefit from healthier, cleaner and more dignified environments in which to learn and grow.
