An education support initiative was launched at T/T/ Al Hambra Maha Vidyalayam in Trincomalee District, providing Grade 5 Scholarship past paper books to 52 Grade 4 students as they begin preparing for the 2027 examination.
The distribution marked the first phase of a wider programme designed to improve access to educational resources for students attending under resourced government schools. Many families within the targeted communities depend on fishing and daily wage labour and face financial barriers that can make examination materials and private tuition difficult to afford.
Providing Essential Resources for Examination Preparation
he students received past paper books containing 10 years of previous Grade 5 Scholarship Examination papers, giving them an important resource for regular practice and revision.
Working through previous examination questions can help students become more familiar with examination formats, strengthen subject knowledge and identify areas where additional preparation may be needed. The wider programme was developed to improve examination readiness through past paper practice, revision and supplementary academic support.
Reducing Barriers for Rural Students
Students attending the four participating schools come primarily from economically disadvantaged fishing and daily wage labour communities. For many families, purchasing additional educational materials or paying for private tuition places further pressure on already limited household incomes.
Providing these resources directly through schools helps reduce this financial barrier and gives students greater access to the materials they need to prepare for an important stage of their education.
Building Knowledge and Examination Confidence
The programme was designed not only to provide books but also to strengthen students’ knowledge, confidence and examination skills. Regular practice using previous papers can support revision and give students greater opportunities to prepare for examination conditions.
The wider project also includes structured supplementary coaching through participating schools, with morning, evening and weekend sessions focused on revision, past paper practice, mock examinations and areas requiring additional academic support.
Expanding Support Across Trincomalee
T/T/ Al Hambra Maha Vidyalayam was the first of four selected schools to receive educational materials through the initiative. Across the complete programme, 124 students from four government schools in Trincomalee District are expected to receive support as they prepare for the 2027 Grade 5 Scholarship Examination.
The participating schools include T/T/ Al Hambra Maha Vidyalayam, T/ Chinabay Tamil Vidyalayam, T/T/ Saraswathy Vidyalayam and T/T/ Jamaliya Muslim Maha Vidyalayam. Together, the programme aims to create fairer access to examination preparation resources for students from vulnerable communities.
Investing in Greater Educational Opportunities
This education initiative was funded by Vanni Hope and implemented in collaboration with the People’s Service Council, beginning with the distribution of past paper books to 52 students at T/T/ Al Hambra Maha Vidyalayam.
As the programme continues across the remaining schools, it will provide students with greater opportunities to practise, strengthen their academic abilities and approach the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination with increased preparation and confidence. Through initiatives such as this, access to essential learning resources can help create more equitable educational opportunities for children in underserved communities.
