Vanni Hope providing a bicycle to an A-level student at a children’s home in Batticaloa, supporting education access and travel to school and tuition classes in Sri Lanka

Bicycle Provided for Boy at Vipulanantha Boys Home in Batticaloa

At Vanni Hope, we recognise that access to education is shaped not only by classrooms and textbooks, but also by the ability to travel safely and independently each day. As part of our ongoing education support work, we recently provided a bicycle to support a student studying at Vipulananda Children’s Home in Batticaloa, a home operated by Vanni Hope.

Why This Support Was Needed

As students progress into GCE Advanced Level studies, their academic commitments increase significantly. Many attend external tuition classes, often located several kilometres away, requiring early mornings and late returns.

At Vipulananda Children’s Home, the student receiving this bicycle is currently studying for his A-levels and travels regularly to attend tuition classes outside the home. Prior to receiving this support, travel relied on shared or limited transport options, which added physical strain, delays, and unnecessary stress during an already demanding stage of education.

How This Bicycle Will Help

The bicycle provided through this project enables the student to travel independently, safely, and on time to and from his tuition classes. This practical support reduces physical exhaustion, improves punctuality, and allows him to better manage his daily study schedule.

At Vanni Hope, we provide bicycles to boys when they reach A-level studies, recognising that this stage requires greater independence, longer travel distances, and sustained academic focus. By offering support at this critical point, we help remove barriers that could otherwise affect educational outcomes.

Supporting Education with Purpose

This intervention was implemented directly through Vipulananda Children’s Home, with ongoing oversight from caregivers to ensure the bicycle is well maintained and continues to serve the student effectively.

This project was kindly sponsored by Dr. Malathi Waran (Australia), whose generosity made it possible to respond quickly to an identified need and provide targeted, meaningful support.

Through initiatives like this, we remain committed to supporting students not just academically, but practically, ensuring they have what they need to pursue their education with confidence and dignity.
