Valluvan Thillairajah receiving the Young Humanitarian of 2025 Award at the Sydney Pongal Festival on behalf of the NSW Tamil Community

Director Valluvan Thillairajah Honoured with Young Humanitarian of 2025 Award

Vanni Hope is proud to share that our Director, Valluvan Thillairajah, was awarded the Young Humanitarian of 2025 Award at the Sydney Pongal Festival, on behalf of the NSW Tamil Community. The award recognises his commitment to service and his tireless work behind the scenes supporting humanitarian efforts across Sri Lanka through Vanni Hope.

The award was presented during the festival by elected representatives who were among those in attendance, including Australian Federal MP Dr Andrew Charlton and NSW State MPs Warren Kirby, Charishma Kaliyanda, and Lynda Voltz. Their presence reflected the importance of recognising community-led leadership and youth-driven service within Australia’s multicultural landscape.

At just 21 years of age, Valluvan balances his role at Vanni Hope alongside his studies as a medical student at the University of Melbourne, Australia’s number one medical school. Despite the demands of medical training, he continues to work quietly and consistently in the background, contributing to strategic planning, strengthening partnerships, supporting field teams, and guiding the organisation’s long-term direction, with a strong focus on dignity, accountability, and sustainable impact.

Speaking following the presentation, Valluvan was quick to redirect the recognition toward others, acknowledging not only Vanni Hope’s field teams and supporters, but also the organisation’s broader leadership team.

“While this award carries my name, it reflects a collective effort. Our leadership team, field staff, volunteers, partners, and supporters are the ones doing the real work, standing alongside vulnerable families every day. Their commitment is what turns compassion into meaningful action, and I’m grateful to be part of a team that leads with humility and purpose.”

Those who work closely with Valluvan describe his leadership style as thoughtful and service-driven, marked by a willingness to shoulder responsibility without seeking the spotlight. The recognition serves as a reflection of both his personal dedication and the strong, values-led leadership culture within Vanni Hope.

Vanni Hope extends its sincere thanks to the NSW Tamil Community for this honour and for recognising service-oriented leadership within our community. We are immensely proud of Valluvan’s achievement and grateful to have such dedication, integrity, and talent within our leadership team as we continue our mission to support vulnerable families across Sri Lanka with compassion and purpose.
