For eight families in Vilankulam, Trincomalee, access to safe drinking water had remained a significant challenge for many years. Without proper household water connections, the families had faced daily difficulties in securing reliable water for drinking and other essential household needs.
Through the Water for Life initiative, household drinking water connections were successfully provided to the selected families, giving them direct access to a safer and more reliable water supply within their own homes.
Living Without Reliable Drinking Water
Vilankulam was a disadvantaged rural community where many families had experienced longstanding economic and infrastructure challenges. The families supported through this initiative had limited and irregular incomes, with livelihoods including daily wage work, domestic work, firewood collection and small scale livestock rearing.
Before receiving household connections, the families had relied on inadequate water sources, including open wells where the available water was unsuitable for safe household consumption.
For households already experiencing financial hardship, the cost of establishing a formal water connection had prevented them from gaining reliable access to safe drinking water.
Connecting Water Directly to Eight Homes
The completed initiative enabled eight families to receive formal household drinking water connections, addressing an essential need that had remained unmet within the community.
The work included facilitating the connection process and completing the necessary household installation requirements to ensure that each family received a functional water supply.
Having water available directly at home reduced the difficulties families had previously experienced in accessing and transporting water for their everyday needs.
Improving Health, Hygiene and Daily Life
Reliable access to clean drinking water brought improvements that extended beyond convenience. The new connections supported better household hygiene and reduced the families’ dependence on poor quality water sources.
The initiative also reduced the challenges associated with accessing water while contributing to improved health, dignity and overall living conditions.
For the beneficiary families, having their own household connections provided greater independence and made an essential part of everyday life safer and more manageable.
Creating a Sustainable Source of Support
The household connections were established with long term sustainability in mind. Following the initial assistance required to obtain their connections, the families took responsibility for their ongoing monthly water consumption charges.
This approach addressed the financial barrier that had previously prevented families from obtaining household connections while enabling them to maintain access to water independently into the future.
An Essential Change for Eight Families
The completion of the water connections brought a meaningful improvement to the everyday lives of eight families in Vilankulam. After years of difficulties accessing reliable drinking water, the families gained a safer and more dependable supply directly within their households.
This Water for Life initiative was generously funded by Thamo & Pushpam Gangatharan from Australia in partnership with People’s Service Council. Their support helped address an essential household need while contributing to improved health, hygiene, dignity and wellbeing for families in the community.
