Access to technology can shape how students learn, how teachers deliver education and how efficiently educational services operate. Across Uva Province, three initiatives helped strengthen access to essential computer facilities at two schools and an education office, addressing different needs within the wider education system.
Computers and digital equipment were provided to MO/Sri Gowry Tamil Vidyalayam in Monaragala, BD/Wewalhinna Tamil Vidyalayam in Demodara, and the Passara Zonal Education Office. Together, the initiatives expanded opportunities for students to gain practical experience with technology while also strengthening the digital capacity behind the administration of schools.
Giving Rural Students Greater Access to Technology
For students at MO/Sri Gowry Tamil Vidyalayam, limited computer facilities had restricted opportunities to gain practical digital experience. The school serves more than 175 students from Grade 1 to Grade 11, with access to computers identified as an important step towards strengthening their educational opportunities.
The provision of three computers and related equipment helped establish stronger facilities for computer based learning. Students gained greater opportunities to develop digital literacy, become familiar with technology and use digital resources as part of their education.
Expanding ICT Learning in Demodara
At BD/Wewalhinna Tamil Vidyalayam, 225 students had experienced similar barriers to accessing technology. The school serves children from plantation communities in an economically disadvantaged area, where limited ICT resources had made hands on computer education difficult.
Three computers were provided to strengthen the school’s ICT facilities and support practical learning. This created opportunities for students to build basic computer knowledge, digital literacy and confidence using technology, helping reduce the gap between students in rural communities and those attending better resourced schools.
Strengthening the Services Behind Schools
Technology was also needed beyond the classroom. The Passara Zonal Education Office supports more than 70 officers and provides services to approximately 1,461 principals, teachers and non academic staff across its education zone. Before the initiative, only 39 functioning desktop computers were available, requiring several officers to share equipment and contributing to delays in administrative work.
Three additional desktop computers were provided to help staff carry out essential responsibilities more efficiently. The additional resources strengthened the office’s ability to manage records, prepare reports, communicate with schools and provide administrative support throughout the zone.
Building Digital Skills for the Future
While each initiative responded to a different need, they shared a broader purpose: improving access to technology within education.
For students, access to computers created opportunities to move beyond theoretical knowledge and gain practical digital experience. These skills became increasingly important for further education, future employment and participation in a technology driven world.
For education staff, improved computer access supported the systems and administrative services that schools depended upon each day.
Creating Greater Opportunity Across Uva Province
Together, the three initiatives strengthened different parts of the educational environment across Uva Province. Students in rural and economically disadvantaged communities received greater access to digital learning, while education staff gained additional resources to carry out essential administrative responsibilities.
The support provided at BD/Wewalhinna Tamil Vidyalayam was generously sponsored by The Calais Foundation, contributing to greater access to digital education and helping students build skills that could continue supporting their learning well into the future.
