Empowering a Future Through Skilled Work: Welding Machine Support for the Gananathan Family in Radella Estate

Vanni Hope is proud to announce the successful completion of a livelihood enhancement project, providing a welding machine to the Gananathan family in Radella Estate, Nuwara Eliya. This initiative, aimed at supporting income generation for low-income estate communities, was implemented to create sustainable employment and uplift living standards through skill-based support.

Supporting Livelihoods Through Skilled Trades

During community outreach in Radella Estate, Nuwara Eliya, Vanni Hope identified a recurring challenge faced by many estate families: limited access to stable, skill-based employment. Most residents work as daily wage labourers or estate workers, with little opportunity to pursue vocational training or independent income sources. With low wages and few alternatives, families often struggle to meet even their basic needs.

The Gananathan family was one such household, eager to improve their circumstances but lacking the tools to do so. After learning of their interest in welding, Vanni Hope launched a targeted livelihood enhancement project to support them. In July 2025, the family received a brand-new welding machine, creating an opportunity to launch their own small-scale welding business. This simple but impactful initiative offers a pathway to self-employment, financial security, and long-term independence through skilled trade.

Creating Pathways to Economic Stability

The welding machine opens up immediate and sustainable income-generating potential for the Gananathan family. By enabling them to take on local repair and fabrication work, this initiative supports:

  • A steady income source independent of estate labour
  • Career development through hands-on technical skills
  • Improved quality of life for both the family and their wider community

This project also aligns with Vanni Hope’s mission of building economic resilience in marginalized areas through small-scale, targeted interventions that empower individuals and families to thrive.

Partnership and Ongoing Commitment

This project was successfully implemented through the combined efforts of Vanni Hope Sri Lanka and Vanni Hope Australia, with coordination across local teams and international leadership. By working closely with the Gananathan family and community members, the project was completed within the planned timeline in July 2025, ensuring that the welding machine was delivered and put to use without delay.

Beyond the initial donation, Vanni Hope remains actively involved in tracking the project’s outcomes. Follow up visits and communication with the family will help us understand the long-term impact of the equipment and identify any additional support needed. This approach reflects our broader commitment to building sustainable, community driven change.

We are sincerely grateful to all our partners and supporters. Your continued trust and generosity enable us to invest in meaningful, practical projects, turning simple tools into powerful drivers of self-reliance and resilience.
