Emergency medical equipment and wheelchairs provided to government hospitals in Trincomalee by Vanni Hope

Strengthening Emergency Treatment Units at 9 Divisional Hospitals Across The Trincomalee District

Vanni Hope is proud to share the successful completion of an Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU) Strengthening Program at 9 government divisional hospitals across the Trincomalee District. This initiative focused on improving emergency preparedness and frontline care by addressing critical equipment gaps identified directly by hospital medical officers and staff.

Emergency Treatment Units are often the first point of care for patients experiencing life-threatening conditions. In districts like Trincomalee, where hospitals serve large rural catchment areas and transfers to the General Hospital can take significant time, having a well-equipped ETU can be the difference between life and death.

Hospitals Supported Through This Program

Through this program, ETU strengthening support was delivered to the following government hospitals in the Trincomalee District:

  1. District Hospital Nilaveli
  2. District Hospital Van Ela
  3. Base Hospital Pulmoddai
  4. District Hospital Kuchchaveli
  5. District Hospital Padavi Sripura
  6. District Hospital Gomarankadawala
  7. District Hospital Thampalakamam
  8. District Hospital Maha Divulwewa
  9. District Hospital Thoppur

Each hospital was assessed in collaboration with medical officers to identify priority shortfalls affecting emergency care delivery.

Essential Emergency Equipment Provided

Based on on-site assessments and hospital requests, Vanni Hope supported the procurement and handover of essential medical equipment to strengthen ETU functionality and patient mobility. Items provided across the hospitals included:

  • Wheelchairs to support patient movement within emergency units and wards
  • Spinal boards for trauma and emergency patient transfer
  • Multiparameter monitoring support and essential monitoring accessories
  • Digital blood pressure monitors and aneroid sphygmomanometers
  • Pulse oximeters for oxygen saturation monitoring
  • Digital thermometers
  • Spot lamps for emergency procedures
  • Suture set pads and basic surgical instruments
  • Gauze bandages, elastoplast, and dressing materials
  • Paediatric airway equipment and urinary catheter bags

These items were selected to support triage, stabilisation, trauma care, safe patient transfer, and emergency management while patients await further treatment or referral.

Supporting Frontline Emergency Care

The official handover of equipment was carried out with hospital leadership and emergency staff, ensuring items were immediately integrated into daily operations. This support strengthens patient safety, reduces delays in care, and improves working conditions for healthcare workers serving high-demand environments.

Acknowledging Community-Led Support

This ETU strengthening program was made possible through the generosity of supporters of Dr. Krishna Mandaleson’s recent fundraiser, whose collective contributions enabled the procurement of this critical equipment. We also sincerely thank Dr. Krishna Mandaleson for his leadership and close coordination with our team, from clinical assessment through to implementation.

At Vanni Hope, we remain committed to strengthening public health systems by listening to frontline needs and working collaboratively with medical professionals and government institutions. This program reflects how community-driven support can translate into tangible, life-saving impact.
