We are so proud to announce the successful completion of two Health Support Projects in the Trincomalee District, Eastern Province, Sri Lanka, aimed at enhancing emergency medical response and improving patient outcomes in rural healthcare facilities.
These initiatives focused on strengthening the Emergency Treatment Units (ETUs) at Eachilampattru Divisional Hospital sponsored by Dr Balachandran, from London, UK and Seruvila Divisional Hospital sponsored by Renee & Thevarajan ensuring that communities in remote regions have access to timely and life-saving emergency care.
Enhancing Emergency Care at Eachilampattru Divisional Hospital
The Eachilampattru Divisional Hospital serves as a crucial healthcare facility for over 10,000 residents in the Verugal Division, providing primary and secondary care in a geographically isolated area. However, limited resources and outdated equipment hindered its ability to manage emergencies effectively.
Through this project, Vanni Hope provided essential medical equipment including:
- Portable suction machine to support airway management in trauma and cardiac cases.
- Suturing kits for wound management and minor surgical procedures.
- Elastroplasters for emergency dressing and immobilization.
The project also included operational and follow-up monitoring support to ensure effective implementation and sustainability.
This initiative was generously sponsored by Dr. Balachandran, London, UK, whose contribution has strengthened the hospital’s emergency treatment capacity, allowing healthcare staff to respond more efficiently to critical cases and reduce preventable complications.
By enhancing stabilization procedures and improving referral readiness, the project has empowered medical teams to save more lives within the rural Eastern Province.
Upgrading the Emergency Treatment Unit at Seruvila Divisional Hospital
Located in the Serunuwera Division, Seruvila Divisional Hospital provides emergency and general healthcare services to approximately 13,600 residents across 17 Grama Niladhari Divisions. Despite serving as the main healthcare provider in the region, the hospital’s ETU lacked modern medical devices and adequate facilities to handle trauma and emergency cases.
The project addressed these gaps through the provision of critical medical equipment including:
- Laryngoscope for airway and resuscitation procedures.
- Pediatric ambu bags to support child and infant emergency care.
- Pulse oximeters with adult and pediatric probes for vital monitoring.
- Wheelchair to improve patient mobility and accessibility.
- Elastroplasters and operational monitoring support to strengthen day to day ETU functions.
This project was kindly sponsored by Ranee & Thevarajan, whose generous support has directly enhanced emergency response capacity, enabling healthcare professionals to deliver timely and effective care to patients in urgent need.
By improving infrastructure and equipping frontline medical staff, the project contributes to reducing patient transfer delays and ensuring better survival outcomes in critical conditions.
Empowering Rural Healthcare and Saving Lives
Both ETU strengthening projects exemplify our commitment to building resilient healthcare systems in underserved regions. By providing essential equipment, training support, and operational follow-up, these initiatives ensure continuity of care and long-term impact on community health.
Key outcomes of these initiatives include:
- Enhanced capacity to manage trauma, cardiac, and maternal emergencies.
- Reduced delays in patient stabilization and referral.
- Improved staff efficiency and confidence in emergency response.
- Increased community trust in local healthcare services.
A Shared Commitment to Health and Hope
Vanni Hope extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Balachandran, London, UK, and Ranee & Thevarajan for their invaluable generosity and compassion in supporting these lifesaving initiatives.
Together, we continue to strengthen healthcare access, promote wellbeing, and build resilient communities across Sri Lanka.
