Emergency Nutritional Support for Pregnant Women Affected by Cyclone in Thirukkovil

Pregnant women are among the most vulnerable groups during emergencies, particularly when disasters disrupt livelihoods, food access, and healthcare services. In the Thirukkovil area of the Ampara District, recent disaster impacts placed additional strain on families already facing economic hardship, increasing the risk of food insecurity for expectant mothers.

As part of its Emergency Response for Disaster Impacted Families, Vanni Hope implemented a Nutritional Meals Provision initiative to support pregnant women during this critical period.

Emergency Nutritional Assistance Through Thirukkovil MOH

The initiative was carried out at the Office of the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) in Thirukkovil, ensuring coordination with local health authorities and frontline medical professionals. A total of 50 pregnant women from disaster affected families were supported through this emergency intervention.

By working through the MOH, the project aligned nutritional support with ongoing maternal healthcare services, helping address both immediate needs and health risks associated with pregnancy during emergencies.

Contents of the Emergency Nutrition Relief Packs

Each beneficiary received a comprehensive emergency nutrition relief pack, designed to support daily meals and provide essential nutrients during pregnancy. The contents reflected locally appropriate foods and aimed to strengthen dietary diversity following disaster related disruptions.

Items distributed included:

  • Staple foods such as rice, lentils, chickpeas, cowpea, and other pulses
  • Nutrient dense ingredients including sesame, peanuts, finger millet, and black gram flour
  • Protein sources such as eggs, soy meat, chicken, anchovies, sardines, mackerel, and canned fish
  • Fresh vegetables and leafy greens including vallarai keerai, ponnanganni, beans, long beans, lady fingers, and green banana
  • Fruits such as banana, papaya, mango, oranges, and lemons
  • Dairy and supplementary items including milk, yogurt, coconut, margarine, and dates

These emergency food packs helped stabilize household nutrition during a period of uncertainty and recovery.

Supporting Maternal Health During Emergency Recovery

Emergency situations can significantly impact maternal health by limiting access to food, income, and care. This initiative helped ease immediate pressures on pregnant women by ensuring access to nutritious foods while families worked to recover from disaster impacts.

Providing this support through a trusted health setting also reinforced health messaging and encouraged continued engagement with maternal health services during recovery.

From Emergency Relief to Health Resilience

This Nutritional Meals Provision initiative represents a critical component of Vanni Hope’s broader emergency response efforts in the Eastern Province. By prioritizing pregnant women within disaster affected communities, the project supports both immediate relief and longer term health resilience.

We extend our sincere thanks to the People of Malaysia for the generous sponsorship of this project. Their contribution made it possible to deliver timely, dignified assistance to pregnant women and families navigating recovery after disaster.
