Strengthening Mathematics Education in Balangoda: Resource Support for 250 Students

We are proud to highlight the successful implementation of an Education Support Project at R/B/Thiruvalluvar Maha Vidyalayam, located in Balangoda within the Rathnapura District.
With more than 250 students from Grades 1–13, this school plays a key role in shaping the academic future of children in this rural community. However, the lack of adequate mathematical learning tools has long limited students’ ability to fully engage with hands on activities and strengthen foundational numeracy skills.

This project was created to bridge that gap by equipping the school with the essential resources required for effective mathematics teaching and learning.

Enhancing Classroom Learning Through Essential Mathematics Tools

To support meaningful and practical mathematics education, the project provided the school with a variety of instructional materials and instruments. These resources were selected to help students better understand:

  • Number manipulation
  • Decimals (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
  • Geometry and measurement
  • Statistics, graphing, and data interpretation
  • Practical, real world mathematical applications

Students can now explore mathematical concepts through hands on activities rather than relying only on textbook instruction, an approach proven to improve comprehension and confidence.

Project Deliverables and Key Components

The initiative included several essential elements to strengthen the school’s learning environment:

  • Provision of mathematical instruments and learning tools
  • Transportation and delivery of materials
  • A new name board for visibility and identification
  • Follow up and monitoring support to ensure effective use of resources

Each component was designed to support both teachers and students by creating an interactive, well resourced classroom environment that fosters curiosity, accuracy, and analytical thinking.

Expected Impact on Students and the School Community

The project aims to deliver long-term improvements in education quality, including:

  • Higher mathematics exam pass rates
  • Stronger academic performance across grade levels
  • Better preparation for higher education pathways
  • Increased student engagement and classroom participation
  • Improved attendance due to a more supportive school environment
  • Enhanced teaching quality through access to proper tools and resources

Together, these outcomes contribute to a more confident, capable, and motivated student community.

Supporting Educational Equity in Underserved Regions

Schools in rural Sri Lanka often lack access to updated or complete learning materials. By addressing this gap, the project provides students with the same opportunities enjoyed by their peers in more resource-rich environments.

This initiative ensures:

  • Equal access to quality learning tools
  • A supportive and inspiring academic environment
  • Practical exposure that deepens conceptual understanding
  • A foundation that encourages students to pursue further studies in STEM fields

The project not only supports academic growth but also strengthens long-term development within the community.

Made Possible Through Generosity and Compassion

This impactful project was generously sponsored by LAKSHMANA IYER SASITHARAN (Australia).
Their commitment made it possible to:

  • Fully equip the school with essential mathematical resources
  • Improve daily teaching and learning experiences
  • Support the academic journey of 250 students
  • Deliver long lasting benefits to an entire school community

We extend our sincere appreciation to LAKSHMANA IYER SASITHARAN for supporting meaningful educational opportunities and uplifting children in underserved regions of Sri Lanka.
