Emergency Food Relief for Families in Kandenuwara and Periya Selvakanda Estates After Heavy Rains and Landslides

Access to daily food, electricity and safe transport was severely disrupted for families in Kandenuwara Estate and Periya Selvakanda Estate, located under the Rattota Divisional Secretariat in the Matale District, after days of heavy rainfall triggered landslides across the area. Damaged roads, unstable ground conditions and power interruptions made it difficult for households to manage basic daily needs.

In response to this emergency, Vanni Hope carried out a food relief intervention to support affected families during this challenging period.

Situation Overview

Approximately 100 families, representing around 337 individuals, were affected by heavy rains and landslides across Kandenuwara and Periya Selvakanda Estates. Community disruptions included interrupted transport routes, electricity outages, temporary shelter challenges, and limited access to food, clothing and other basic necessities.

These conditions placed significant pressure on families, particularly those already facing vulnerability.

Emergency Food Relief Intervention

To address immediate food insecurity, dry-food supplies were provided to 40 families, benefiting approximately 203 individuals across both estates.

Of these, 30 families were supported in Kandenuwara Estate, while 10 families received assistance in Periya Selvakanda Estate. This timely intervention helped households meet their basic food needs while access routes and services remained disrupted.

Community Response and Impact

Children and families expressed happiness and gratitude for the support, sharing that the food supplies brought comfort and a sense of normalcy despite the ongoing challenges. Beyond addressing immediate needs, the intervention helped strengthen community resilience as families continued to cope with damaged infrastructure and limited services.

Continuing Support

This food relief effort forms part of Vanni Hope’s broader emergency response to severe weather impacts across Sri Lanka. While immediate needs have been addressed, continued support will be important as families work towards recovery and stability.
