We are pleased to share the successful completion of a livelihood recovery initiative in Andiyapuliyankulam village, Vengalachettikulam Division, Vavuniya District. Through this project, irrigation pipes and clothing support were provided to families whose agricultural systems were severely damaged by heavy rains and flooding in late 2025.

This initiative was implemented to help affected households restore farming activities and regain stability following significant flood related losses.

Livelihood Disruption Following Severe Flooding

Andiyapuliyankulam is a rural farming village where agriculture serves as the primary and often sole source of income for families. Severe rainfall and flooding caused major damage to irrigation infrastructure, washing away or destroying existing pipe systems that farmers rely on to cultivate their lands.

Without functional irrigation facilities, farming activities came to a halt, placing 15 families under financial strain and increasing vulnerability within the community. The inability to access water for crops directly threatened household income and food security.

Recognising the urgency of restoring irrigation access, targeted support was provided to help families resume cultivation in time for the upcoming season.

Strengthening Agricultural Recovery Through Infrastructure Support

The project focused on the provision of irrigation pipes to replace those damaged during the floods. By restoring water flow to agricultural lands, farmers are now able to restart cultivation and rebuild their livelihoods.

Clothing support was also distributed to assist families recovering from flood related hardships. While irrigation restoration addressed livelihood recovery, the additional support helped ease immediate burdens faced by households.

These combined efforts contribute to stabilizing income sources and supporting long term agricultural sustainability within the village.

Beneficiaries and Community Impact

A total of 15 farming families directly benefited from this initiative. With irrigation systems restored, farmers are able to resume agricultural activities, improve crop production, and regain self sufficiency.

Restoring irrigation access is expected to positively impact the upcoming cultivation season, strengthen household income stability, and reduce long term economic vulnerability caused by flood damage.

Access to reliable irrigation infrastructure is essential for rural agricultural communities. By restoring damaged systems, this initiative helps ensure that families can continue farming despite the challenges posed by natural disasters. Sustained support for rural livelihoods plays a crucial role in strengthening resilience, promoting food security, and enabling families to recover with dignity and stability.

Appreciation and Continued Commitment

We extend our sincere appreciation to The Calais Foundation for their generous partnership and commitment to supporting rural livelihood recovery. Their contribution played a vital role in enabling families in Andiyapuliyankulam to restore irrigation systems, resume agricultural activities, and move toward renewed self reliance.

Through collaborative efforts, communities affected by natural disasters can rebuild with greater strength, resilience, and dignity.
