We are proud to announce that we initiated a vital water and sanitation project for BD/ST/James Tamil Vidyalayam in Hali Ela, Badulla District, with the aim of improving access to clean and safe water for students and teachers. The project will directly benefit 329 students and 24 teachers studying and working at the school.
Located in a rural and economically disadvantaged area of the Uva Province, the school primarily serves children from low income farming, fishing, and daily wage earning families. Despite the dedication of the school community, the existing water facilities had fallen into a poor condition, creating ongoing challenges for daily school activities and student wellbeing.
Addressing an Urgent Need
The school had been facing serious difficulties due to damaged pipelines, leaking taps, poor drainage systems, and unhygienic conditions across the premises. These issues created health and sanitation concerns for students while also affecting their comfort, dignity, and ability to focus on their education.
Recognizing the urgent need for improvement, this project was launched to restore the school’s water infrastructure and establish reliable tubewell and potable water supply facilities within the school premises.
The initiative includes:
• Installation of a new tubewell system
• Water supply connections for the school
• Pipeline development and internal water supply improvements
• Installation of a water motor
• Maintenance and monitoring support
Through these improvements, students and teachers will gain access to clean, safe, and functional water facilities that support better hygiene and healthier learning conditions.
Creating a Safer and More Dignified School Environment
Access to clean water plays a critical role in the daily lives of students. Improved sanitation facilities help reduce health risks, encourage better hygiene practices, and create a safer and more supportive school environment.
This project is expected to significantly improve the overall wellbeing and comfort of students while helping the school maintain healthier living and learning conditions for years to come. The school community will also support the sustainability of the initiative through caretaker supervision, hygiene awareness activities, and ongoing maintenance efforts.
Long Term Impact Through Sustainable Support
Beyond improving immediate access to clean water, this project also focuses on long term sustainability and community responsibility. The school will assign caretakers to help maintain the water facilities and ensure that the system continues to function effectively for students and staff.
In addition, hygiene awareness activities will support students in understanding the importance of sanitation, cleanliness, and safe water practices in their daily lives. Community contributions and school maintenance efforts will further help sustain the project and support future repairs when needed.
Through these combined efforts, the initiative aims to create lasting improvements that will continue benefiting future generations of students at BD/ST/James Tamil Vidyalayam.
A Meaningful Contribution Towards Student Wellbeing
This important initiative was made possible through the generous sponsorship of the SMEC Foundation in partnership with Vanni Hope. Their support will make a lasting difference in the lives of hundreds of students by helping provide something essential to every child’s education and wellbeing; access to clean and safe water.
