Vanni Hope and World Vision Lanka Provide Clean Drinking Water for Kirimichai Families

In collaboration with World Vision Lanka and the Department of National Community Water Supply (DNCWS), Vanni Hope is proud to announce a transformative initiative under our Water for Life Project. This partnership focuses on ensuring access to clean drinking water for 110 families in the Kirimichai village of Vaharai DS Division, Batticaloa District. Sponsored by Dr. Aran Sritharan, this project addresses critical water scarcity challenges in a community deeply affected by displacement, marginalisation, and environmental hardships.

Kirimichai is home to a vulnerable population engaged in agriculture, freshwater fishing, and livestock farming. However, the community struggles with water scarcity, particularly during dry months, when groundwater levels drop, leaving only six of the 14 agro wells usable for drinking purposes. Women and children often walk up to 14 kilometres in search of water, relying on unsafe sources and risking exposure to waterborne diseases.

These conditions have not only hindered agricultural productivity but also negatively impacted health, education, and overall wellbeing. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a growing concern due to reliance on unclean water, further emphasising the urgency of this project.
