Seeking Support for an Ultrasound Machine for Kaluwanchikudy Base Hospital

The Kaluwanchikudy Base Hospital, located in Batticaloa District, Eastern Province, Sri Lanka, is a vital healthcare facility serving approximately 180,000 individuals—around one-third of the district’s population. Spread across 90 villages and 65 Grama Niladhari divisions, this population falls under the jurisdiction of the Kaluwanchikudy, Manmunai West, and Manmunai South-West Divisional Secretariats. Despite its Grade A status and over a century of service, the hospital faces significant challenges due to the lack of essential medical equipment. One critical need is an ultrasound machine for its obstetrics and gynecology unit, an essential tool for providing timely and effective healthcare.

A Century of Service and Growth

Originally established as a central dispensary, the Kaluwanchikudy Base Hospital has grown into a top-tier healthcare facility. With a 256-bed capacity, a steady bed occupancy rate of 50–55%, and a dedicated team of 235 staff members, including seven consultants, the hospital provides critical healthcare services to the region. The medical team includes specialists such as a VP, two VOGs, a Pediatrician, a Surgeon, an Anesthetist, and a Radiologist.

The Critical Need for an Ultrasound Machine

Currently, the hospital’s obstetrics and gynecology unit lacks its own ultrasound machine, a vital tool for diagnosing and monitoring maternal and fetal health. To meet this need, the hospital relies on a borrowed ultrasound machine from Arayampathy Hospital, located 20 kilometers away. This borrowed equipment is used for approximately 1,000 scans each month, underscoring the urgent need for a dedicated ultrasound machine on-site.

The absence of this essential equipment creates delays in diagnosis and treatment, impacting the quality of care provided to pregnant women and other patients. A dedicated ultrasound machine would ensure timely, efficient healthcare services, reduce reliance on external facilities, and improve outcomes for the community.

Cost and Sponsorship Opportunities

The cost of procuring a new ultrasound machine is estimated at:

  • LKR 9.1 million Rs.
  • AUD $48,000
  • USD $32,000
  • CAD $44,000
  • GBP £25,000

We welcome both part and full sponsorship to make this project a reality. Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us closer to providing this essential equipment and enhancing healthcare for thousands of individuals in the region.
